I read in a book on temples.
Lord siva helped the devas/asuras to churn the paarkadal. When the snake used as rope for churning spit poison (suffering pain) Lord Siva took the poison and saved the devas/asuras. When finally amudham was found, devas forgot Siva and started enjoying themselves. Later they went to Siva for forgiveness. Siva forgave them and danced for them between the horns of Nandi. That is the time on pradosham day when abishekam is performed. It is done on thirayodasi day.
Since it is the time when devas were forgiven for the time they forgot to worship, the same is considered to apply to us. Siva darshanam on pradosham day relieves us from the paapam of not doing darshan on other days. Offering a "vilva ilai" is considered good.

Chudar,
That story is just symbolic! Churning of milky ocean for Divine Nector and Siva consuming the HalaHala is something supposed to take place in the microcosm - within us - for those seeking IT!
Patanjali Yoga Sutra and Thirumanthiram in Tamil deal in detail with this subject.
I shall write on this, when I get time later.
