Hi,
Can anyone tell me if brahmins and vellalars (specifically saiva pillais) have historically, or in contemporary times, intermarried. Does the similarity in way of life eg. vegetarianism, certain degree of 'sanskritisation', contribute to lessening the rift between these two communities?
Also, does anyone know the caste-origins of the present sri vaishnava iyengar brahmins originally converted by sri ramanujacharya (ie. from which community were they mostly drawn)?
thanks.

in addition to those, can anybody tell me if the agraharams in the rural communities are becoming more heterogenous in caste composition?
to what extent does the mirasdar system remain in the hands of brahmins and rich vellalars?

Azhakan: To an extent (I mean based on whatever little I have personally seen)your learning about agraharams is correct. Even in some villages that are home to renowned Perumal temples(AzhwArgaLal mangaLAsAsanam seiyappatta) the total Brahmin families have reduced to some single digit number. In such places the agraharam bears a very catholic look with Muslim families too buying in some houses. And, I don't know anything about the mirasdar system.

thanks for the information. i think previously the agraharams in the various rural graamams were kept strictly as residence for brahmin families, and then further divided still into sect (smartha, sri vaishnava) and subsect (brhacharanam, vadama etc). i would expect that now with social and economic mobility, more of the non-brahmins, maybe even adi dravidas, are finding property in the agraharam.
