About 10% of Sri Lanka's poppulation is made up of Kurukulams who call themselves variously as Kaurava, Karava, Kurukulathar etc. They speak either Tamil or Sinhala and are accordingly classed as Tamils or Sinhalese. they all claim descent from the Ksatriyas of the Mahabharata.

Can anyone give inforation on related groups in South India or Malaya ?

  Karave is a composite caste today, just like all castes across Indai. Many elements have fused with it as well as others have moved away and joined other castes (such as Govigama)
  
  All South Indian fishing castes have fused with it namely Parathavar (cvalled as Bharata Kula amongst Sin) Mukkuvar (called as Mukkaru in Sinhalese) and Karaiyar.
  
  Karaiyar in Tamil Nadu are a minuscle group and dont live close to Sri Lanka, so most so called Karaiyar/Karave in Sri Lanka are people who have taken a title of caostal dweller but from many different origins including Telugus (vaduge)

  i) caste in ancient india was based on character rather than color or birth. eg) thieves were assumed lowest caste
  ii) dark people and non brahmins ruled india especially the south infact they constituted many brahmins. So there is no doubt that dark brahmins who are present today were existing even before a 2000 years as brahmins.
