At some point or other every caste has ruled some part of Tamilnadu. I recently read that Kuravar ruled Kanyakumari area at some point in history.

Muthuraja is a caste name used in areas around Trichy. As it is wont in Tamilnadu, Muthurajas claim descent from the Mutharayar clan, which is a possibility considering the similarity of names, areas of occupation and folklore. Mutharayars ruled Tanjavur / Chola kingdom for a century or more before being unseated by Vijalaya Chola. After the ascent of Cholas, they were ruling as small principality in areas around Trichy.

This is quite interesting. My parents are decent from Muthuraja clan from Trichy, now settled in Malaysia. Just tried out of curiosity and found something about Muthurajas. Many people here don't know and have not heard about them. I heard from my relatives bits and pieces but it does not make any sense as to thier origin. They say that they were fomerly known as Kalaris etc. Surely there must be written texts which can throw some light? that might be helpful.

Hi All,
Yep...MuthuRaja is a King generation. When Cholas, Cheras, and Pandyas ruled "Tamil Nadu" they invaded and capture all of them. They came from the land which is being called as "Andhra Pradesh" now. Since they captured and controlled three great regions and kingdoms they were called as "Muthariyar" (Mean Moonru + Thalai + People. This can't be explained in other language. Only in tamil it is possible)
They ruled Somewhere around 700 A.D. for 200 years in "Tamil Nadu". During such period there were no literature nor documents were found. In history this period have been called as "Dark age" (Irunda kallam).

MUTHURAJAS are of decendants of MUTTARAYAS of Pallava era. Muttarayas were sub-kings of Pallavas who were Vedic Kshatriyas.

Thank You A.S.K and M.Katti for the additional info. From my parents I have also heard about Ponnar, Sangarar and Nallathanga stories. Is this related to the muthuraja clan period or tradition or is it of a earlier origin. Any relationship between the two?
