In the late 70s, when I was a kid living in Madras, I have heard legends about this pettai rowdy called Sabash Raman based in Choolai medu. He was apparently the most poewerful rowdy in Northern Madras at that time.
The story goes that he had many enemies and they conspired to kill him with the help of tthe police. So they set him up and he died in a police encounter armed with nothing but soda bottles.
He had ardent followers who wanted to avenge thier leader's death. And they knew that there were other rowdies who connived with the police. So they went around Madras city casually walking up to guys who looked like rowdies at bus stops and asking them "Unakku Sabash Ramana theriyuma?". If they answered in the affirmative, they would get stabbed on the spot. My friend who was once asked by his henchmen in Egmore didn't know who he was and answered "theriyaadhu" to which they todl him "Theriyumna mattum sollirundha onna ingaye kuthiruppen" and brandished a knife in broad daylight.
Anyone else in this forum has heard anything about this notorious legend?
