The history of Aluva dates back to the days of the master carpenter Perum- thachan. The son of renowned scholar Vararuchi, who was patronised by King Vikramaditya, Perumthachan is associated with Uliyannore, one of the places of prominence in Aluva. History, rather belief has it that the famous Shiva temple at Uliyannore was built by Perumthachan. Going deep into the historical aspects, it becomes clear that the history of Aluva blends well with the days of this master carpenter and his hamlet of Uliyannore.
The Aitihyas of yore draw a clear picture of Aluva and Uliyannore through the narration of Perumthachan’s tale. Uliyan- nore is a piece of land on the banks of the Periyar river which flows through Aluva. Perumthachan belonged to this place. Even today there are a few families who claim to be the descendants of this genius.

Thiruvalla is also blessed with the wonderful works of constructions - the Flagpost in the Sree Vallabha Temple with a height of 5.3 mts. from ground level and 1.5 mts below ground level constructed from a single rock with a Garudan composed by "Perumthachan" at the top.

Robin,
There is a story in the Itheehyamala about the origin of Perumthachan & his 11 brothers. I don't remember the full story - let me check the net.
Regarding the movie, it was a classic in all respects. Thilakan was brilliant - showed us that he is the right person to act in such roles. Monisha was terrific too.

Dear Robin,
I have seen your positive interest in history in many threads you've started, but I have to let you know that unlike Eluthatchan, historical Perumthachan is a mythical figure so is Vararuchi. www.namboothiri.com has a link on Vararuchi and his numerous children. It is a myth, which has no real historical evidence, and real historians treat it that way. It is similar to Syrian Christians claiming St. Thomas came to Kerala. He did not and it is not history because millions of people believe in it. Please differentiate between what is history and myth. Thanks

Thanks Raveen, I did not know that perumthachan is a mythical figure. But then doesnt a mythical character originate from a phenomenon in the past that the folk tradition then mystifies to a greater legend. Can you please throw some light on the original basis of this mythical character. Thanks once again.

Raveen,
Perum Thachan's fame does not exist solely on the story given in the www.namboothiri.com site. In fact the idol of the very famous Kottarakkara Ganapathi temple was installed by Perum Thachan himself. It is well depicted in the movie - also there are temple records for the same. I would take the view that such a person who brought in many new facets to the art of sculpturing did exist, though very likely most of the legends surrounding him are false.

I just came to know there is discussion about Perumthatcan. I have similar curiousity of what, who and how is Perumthachan or just Thatchan.
Does anyone have any information where I could be introduced to or meet any thatchan in Kerala. I want to learn and know, or if not impossible see how he works.
