Narayanan,
"in that sense the caste is a one to be preserved and it should not be the root cause for the riots
"
You deserved to be born couple of centuries ago to live in a jathi based society where society was divided based on work. The caste system weakend India and made easy for invaders to conquer us. In today's Industrialized society, anyone can become a doctor or a janitor. We have to move forward and unite our people through inter-caste and inter-religious marriages. To achieve such goals first we have to make Indian society 100% literate and 100% employed. The Aryan castes, Brahmin, Vaisya and kshatria are not native to India. They were imposed on us by the racist Aryan invaders and called all native jathis(kulams) as shudras. Five-thousand years ago our ancesters created great Indus-valley civilization. Time has come for us to unite and show the world that we are worthy inheritors of such civilization.
Modren society admires the talented people irrespective one's jathi, religion, race or nationality. A Chettiyar doctor admires a fellow physican who have advanced the medical field than a fellow chettiyar. Same goes for all other professions. We can always study our history how people lived in the past but that should have no bearing in the present. Breaking the Caste barriers is the answer not the preservation.

madhu.. i dont completley agree with u...i dont think u understood narayan properly, i dont think there is anything wrong when narayan says, "in that sense the caste is a one to be preserved and it should not be the root cause for the riots
"
preserving ones caste/culture is preserving ones heritage...and Indians have done well so far in preserving values, this has been the world's envy for centuries.
though i do agree with u in a certain way. i think a line has to drawn, a line which separates the sense of pride ( which leads to preserving nature) and being fanatic...together with the overall thought and action of upbringing
"Time has come for us to unite and show the world that we are worthy inheritors of such civilization. " as u put it.
so "Breaking the Caste barriers is the answer not the preservation" is certainly "not a must"
