The Iyers of Kerala reached there from Tamil Nadu long back.It is believed by them that they went there about 500 years back.Is there some reference to this in any book or essay about Tamil Nadu. Some information can be got from website http://www.homesteads.com/keralaiyers.
I would be gratefull if somebody can give me refrence to other articles about this group of people.

Anu,
Wonder if you can give me some info? In Travancore there was a plot to kill King Marthanda Varma. After the plotters were caught, do you know who became the body guards of the King? Do you know anything about the war against the Dutch? Are there any books (preferably older books) on the history of the Travancore Kingdom in the 17th and 18th centuries?
Thanks.

Hi,
I regret the delay in responding to your query. I come here rather once in a week or so..
Could you be a little more specific about the plot which you refer to? There were several attempts on the life of Marthanda Varma, before and after his ascension to the throne. Those made on his life before his ascension were quite popular, immortalised as they were by CV Raman Pillai. On one such attempt, Parameshwaran Pillai, the bodyguard of the King got killed. I don't know anything else in this regard.
regarding the war against the Dutch :
Yes, I have read a little on it. If you could be more specific with your query, I might be able to help you.
as for books , there are several by prominent historians - MGS Narayanan's and A.Sreedhara Menon's are quite well written.
But if you need in-depth, authentic info, you might want to check out the 'Travancore State Manual'. They are big tomes, so better check them out from a library. I've seen one in the Kerala University library, Trivandrum.

Hi friends Iyers / Aiyers / Ayers / Iyars There are many surnames (perhaps it is called) in many parts of the world. My name is suffixed with Iyer. The understanding was that being born in a brahmana family the title may be Iyer. During one of our visits to south India, we picked up a book titled "Naachiarammal" written by one Mr Rao of Mysore about a section of the tribes who migrated from Mysore towards down south as far as Thiruvananthapuram. May be this has some points of past 400 years (estimated) as they refer some temples in Tirunelveli, and English influence, etc. It appears there are books or periodicals available at Library in Thiruvantapuram or Madras Public Library. It seems a section of this tribe migrated to North america and other places (The Anatha Vikatan writer Manian on one of his reports mentioned some tribes in North of South America (I vaguely remember this as it is over 35/38 years!!)
If I get the copy of Naachiarammal, the details and references can be posted on this forum

I found something intereting about caste system in India recently. Supose theeare migration from a single group of people to a frontier region over a prolonged period of time, it seems later immigrants tend to view older immigrants as an inferior group du e to their domicile in aforeign place and amongst unknown people for longer time (thius more chance for mixing etc.)
As such does the view that Vadama Iyers as a newer immigrant group (?) into TN view Iyers as inferior and the oldest Brahmin clans in TN as the most inferior ?

Hi hare krishna mani
I think u have got the facts wrong First of all I know only of a book "Nacharamma- the story of her life and migration" By M. Keshavaiah, Mysore published in 1936. Its kannada translation was published in 1938.I should know because the author was my great-great- grandfather whou actually did fieldwork befor he wrote this book.I dont know of a book by any Rao . If it soes exist please give me deatails as I am very interested to know more. And the most important ERROR was that the group migrated nearly 1000 years ago[Not 400 but a millenium]NOT from Mysore south but the other way round!!!They migrated under the guidance of thta great lady Shri Nacharamma TThe community is the still thriving and flourishing SANKETI community who migrated from senkottai in tirunelveli dt via trivandrum. The sanketis speak the sanketi language, which initially started as a dialect of Tamil but has now become a distinct language. It is also true thet the sanketis have migrated in large numbers to the USA and are doing very well there. They have an association called NASA [ North American Sanketi Association] there. You can contact me at drshrikaanth@yahoo.com
hope u find this useful

in olden days tamil iyers served as cooks in kerala brahmin(nambuthris) houses and aristocratic nair/royal houses.the younger sons of a nambhutri familiy was usually marrying(sambandam) from nair casts, nambuthris only eate from a brahmin ,so iyers were kept as "kuttipatter",some times they would allowe to marry from less powerfull branches of nair "tharavadu".thus alot of iyers came to kerala.they were get free food in temples like sri padmanabha in trivandrum.after rammayan became dalava of marthanda varma they got a lot of immportent positions in travancoore, nairs lost their monopoly.rammayan dalava married a nair woman of mavelikara and he died their.his descandents are still their.i think pallakad iyers came before than travancoore iyers, they gave good contributions in fields such as karnatic musics and civil services some well known keralaiyers are malayatoor ramakrishnan, chembay bagavather, palakkad manisamy,ms saminathan,

Reg. the migration of tamil iyers to kerala- I have the following version : during the 14th century kerala namboothirie/potti/thirumeni - land loads use to visit thanjavoor dist to attend vocal music (ofcourse carnatic) concerts. Understanding the unique taste of foods served to the namboothiries some of the uneducated iyers (namboothiries called iyers as pattars)were brought to namboothiri ellams for cooking. In the later years the whole concert groups were also invited to kerala to perform. Many landloads offered them home, land and wealth to settle down in kerla, mostly in Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram dist. Where they pattars (kerala iyers) gave first priority to education. Later many were professionals, king makers and the trustworthy accountants. Now they are settled in every part of the world, but majority of them maintaining their gean quality. (no criminal records or cheating, vandalising, looting, or terrorising. No one jailed for murder or arson) They are the most trusted and dependable lieutnents and think tanks for our old kings, later to the corporate world and even to the most mighty politicians. I guess - once these think tanks moved away from ghadi-clads - the congres patry's popularity also declined.

This book was published in 1936. Its kannaDa translation by the author(amaldAr SrI M.Kesavaiah) itself was published in 1938. I think I have said this earlier. As far as I know, this was not reprinted. He also wrote another book "vivAha mantra sUtragaLu". He is the father -in-law of SrI KonNanUru kESavamUrty-avhA(my grandfather). Hence the author is my great-grandfather(not great-great- forgive the error).

I think you will find a copy of the book in the sankEti hostel (donated by our family) in Mysore.
The author went to the relevant places including SApattUr and met dakSiNa sankEtis and confirmed that they had the same story of the honored lady nAcAramma despite a complete absence of contact between the 2 communities for 9 centuries. He also described some of the customs of the dakSiNa sankEtis and other relevant details from the sankEti community and practices and also quotes from purANas. He has also quoted references to the guNa and mahimAtiSaya of jyOtiShmati leaf and taila from ancient texts. The last part is given in the form of an appendix.
