Punnahai,
are you alluding to Avvai the poetess saint who followed muruga? because I remember in thiruvilaiyadal the old lady who sang the songs to muruga. I think she was called avvai. I saw this movie long time ago, so dont remember exactly. anyways I found a nice write up for Avvaiyar in the following site..
http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/br/2002/10/08/stories/2002100800060300.htm

Ashok,
Thanks for the link.
Yes, I am looking for info on the same poetess Avvai of athichudi and chutta pazham chudaadha pazham fame. Avvai also gave the gift of long life nellikani to adhiyamaan. She is also believed to have accompanied Thiruvalluvar to the arangetram of Thirukural. Some say there were many avvais spanning the centuries, but no one is certain.

yeah.. i have heard from my dad that there were three avvaiyaars. the film avvaiyar portraying kb sundarambal as avvaiyar (same as pazham nee appa), was a confused version of all the happening in the three avvaiyars life.
out of three sangam, i think avvai and thiruvalluvar all belong to the kadaichangam that was in present madurai.

I havent seen any statue of avvaiyar either in TN, but that might be because I was not looking for them.. Talking about statues, did anyone have a chance to visit the bronze statue exhibit in the smithsonian in DC last month. TI was bronze statues from tamil nadu form the chola period. It was damn beautiful, though I kinda disagreed with the display of the deities as a commercial entity where the required respect might not be given to it, it was quite amazing to see the amazing skill our Tamil artisens have... I think they are a travelling display, they might be coming to other areas too. I would suggest any indian to go see these sculptures...

Ashok, Marina beach is so crowded anyway, so you didn't miss much. There's an avvaiyar statue along the beach. I wonder why she is topless (kind of), were all women dressed that way, how did we come up with this avvaiyar look? Obviously there are no photographs, are there any old paintings of her I wonder.

Santa:
Thanks for the lyrics, I just saw it.
>>BTW, why "Avvaikku koon azhagu?" :)<<
The question is avvaikku en koon kodukkanum. May be she was a young chic with no koon :) Probably this old lady form was given to Avvai during recent times when our men were (some still are) unable to accept women as equals and were writing songs such as "pombal siricha pochu" :((

I saw the film Thiru Vilaiyadal and got a poster in 1966 in Ernakulam and bought the video 1995 in Pune. I got a record disc of KB Sundarambal in 1966 in Ernakulam, too. On this disc she is singing Pazham nee ... among other songs, all devotional like in the movie.

What is there to wonder?? Have you ever gone to any village in Tamilnadu? In villages(atleast around madurai,Dindigul & Theni), most of the old women don't wear blouse (only sarees).

Some people said that the Auyaiyar of Athiyamaan's time is not old at all, unlike the Auvaiyaar of the Angavai-Cahgavai time. Who, then wrote the Aathichoodi,Kondrai Venthan, Moothurai and nallVazhi ?
