vanakam to all
i am interested in finding out the structure and relations that traditionally existed in tamil nadu... i'm a student in durban, south africa, and of tamil descent.
jaadi here has almost completely dissappeared but one heres mentions of it sometimes in marriage negotiations especially amongst the few conservatives.
does tamil society fit into the four-fold varna system? are there kshatriya (administrative) and vaishya (mercantile/commercial) communities?
between the brahmin and pariah, how does the traditional heirarchy follow? where do the reddiars (kappus), vellalars, chettiars, vaniars, thevars etc. fit in (in order)?
on a personal note, in which varna are the saiva vellalar pillais placed? i had heard they were traditionally landowners and moneylenders etc... does anybody here have information on this community?
my thanks or your help

Hello Mr.Tony.
Today These three communities are fighting with
each other. There are so many common problems to
all these three castes.(eg.fixing rate for agriculture products by farmers themself - since
above mentioned castes are agriculture based. This
problem can't be solved by a single community)

Mr.Tony told that these three communities comprise of idiots.I strongly condemn it,because
we are emotional people not idiots.without these
three communities nobody can get their food. They
are sacrificing their lives for the sake of others -it may be politician, communal leader or others. All high level people are misusing these
people power.I need a response to this from

Dr.Ramkumar Naicker:
Why do you take offense at the word idiot and backward. Go to Tamil Nadu- everyone hopes to be a backward . Those who are not bribe, to get a certificate. It is a badge of honor to be called an idiot. You have a backward certificate too then why this reaction. Atleast be honest about it.

Devendra kula vellalars [mallars]were rulers of tamilnadu before kulothunga cholan period.Naickers were ruling TN from 1200 ad to 1800 ad.Maravars and Kallars helped Naickers to form the kingdom effetively.During that period Mallars were subjected to humility and lost their lands and finally become sc s in 1950 ad. To fight against British these three castes people united eg.,king kattbomman , thalapathis vellayathevan, sundaralinga devendran. Now there is no fight between Naickers and devendras. After 1996 there is a peace in devendras and mukkulathors area. Both the castes realised that fighting on caste will affect their economic condition and spoil their children's educational carreer. Therefore it is possible that these three major castes can maintain peaceful relationship.

To me, Mr. mannanng katty is an old sinhalese person (posting here in different names)is trying
to make a rift between tamil christians, muslims, brahmins, indians and different extinct castes.
He has gone through his unfortunate life in Tamil Nadu, Jaffna and in India in general.
He is a pervert and helpless.
He is wasting time unless paid by somebody.(you know what I mean?)

All Varnams r in Sanskrit
and
All Caste names r in Tamil
So Varnam came from North and Jathis existed already in Tamil Nadu
So Tamils got rid of Varnashram easily coz it was not their own, but cant get rid of Jathi becos it belong to them

We should not see the present day condition of pallars and kallars and we should examine sangam lit, historians statments. Now the dispute is between "devendra" and "thevar" only. Some large hearted person can research the similarities between THEVAR AND DEVENDRA.--BOTH THE CASTE NAMES LOOK SIMILAR.

@m
shudras are business men
khastrias are warriors
brahmins were gurus and priests
vaishyas were medical professionals
there were conflicts between khastrias and brahmins regarding who is superior
so most of all caste was not based on color or birth.
in south especially full of dark/brown skinned people, majority wins always.
