The other day I was talking to a friend of mine.
He was telling me that I should be ashamed of not knowing Hindi. He said that I don't identify myself as an Indian, I cannot communicate with my fellow Indian and hence should be ashamed of not knowing Hindi. He also added for sake of national integrity every Indian should know Hindi.

Ireland was under British rule for over 400 years. They were treated outright as a servant class and Ireland was subjugated by British and many Ires fled the country .Ireland had a different language and culture but British subjugated them. Still even when Ireland became Independent in 1916, 75% of Ireland spoke Irish language
NOW COMES THE CATCH
After 80 years ,in 2000, Irish language has almost dissappeared from Ireland and 95% speak English- the language of their one time oppressors
Hey Mr Liberminded Tamil,
I think that you are also 'somebody'
more like somebody who is stupid
GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT
before you spout shit
IN 1916 75% OF IRISH PEOPLE DID NOT SPEAK IRISH
there were far fewer - Irish speakers were decimated to about 40 % in 1870 cos of emigration famin and ENGLISH SUPRESSION,
please read my comments on the other thread 'Hindi cannot be national language'
If you wnat to use Ireland as an example get your facts right.

There is nothing wrong in knowing a language..but people who talk about Hindi imposition bla bla forget that today what we speak is not tamil but a mix of all languages...there was a program conducted by one of the tamil channels recently where many people did not even know from which language the words belong..that is the fate of tamil in tamil nadu...atleast let hindi replace the useless language what is spoken today...thanks to all the so called dravidian parties..

There are 1000 dialects in India like Tamil, so every langauge cannot be promoted and learned. Let Hindi replace all the languages, or it will replace every langauge automatically as per the need of hour.
That is what is happneing today, a Tamilian is forced to speak in Hindi when he goes to Bangalore or Hyderabad.

Hindi is spoken by a mere 17% of India's Population. Again in Bangalore Hindi is spoken by a mere 6% Population (Tamil 36%). Hyderabad has about 13% Hindians but Telegus form about 60%(Tamil is spoken by 20% of Secunderabad's Population). What is Hindi? It is combined language of various North Indian Hindustani Dialects such as Khariboli, Rajasthani, Magadhi, Maithili, Chattisgarhi, Haryavni, Pahari etc.,
Should I learn Bhojpuri or Magadhi or Chattisgarhi or Santali or Rajasthani? One thing common to these is the bloody Script that's all.

hindi will eventually replace a language like tamil which is not even spoken properly by the so called tamilians...today what is spoken in tamilnadu is a mixture of all...I remember a tamil program where they asked people to talk in tamil withougt mixing words from other languages...imagine there were tamilian characters who did not even know that many words were english or hindi...this is the fate of tamil and my dear tamilian friends are defending a useless, lost language

Well said Hindian, it is lost useless and meant only for slum dwellers. In another few decades Tamil will be lost if all Tamilians become modern by converting to christianity or by adopting Hindi as their mother tongue.

I'm a tamil and I cannot speak ANY indian language. Ironically i can speak some euro languages like french and spanish, but unless u're gonna socialize with people who constantly speak in tamil or hindi, I don't think that u're at THAT big a loss not knowing an Indian language. But then again I do live in a western country, so it is much different here.

OK, alright, I too will add to the expanding rhetorical. I'll try to put my thoughts as politically correct as possible in order to not to offend my hindi speaking friends. I have had this argument with many people that also included "anti-madrasis" or should I say, "pro-hindi-linguists", who have taken up that stand because of our ("madrasi log") temerity to hold our own. Having said that, I am not going to discuss the origins and bearings of Dravidian movement. What follows is solely my opinion and mine alone.
The general consensus among many people is that most of the tamilians cannot or do not want to speak hindi. This is being viewed as somewhat "anti-nationalistic" attitude, which might hold water in some sense. For example, a national language has been implemented so that people from different parts of the nation can communicate with their fellow citizens . A kashmiri can communicate with a tamilian if both of them learn the national language. And so it goes.
My stand is this: Let the individuals make the choice to learn or not to. If a person needs it for his survival, he/she will learn it. Let us not be ridiculed for not learning/knowing to speak hindi. For the hardliners who stress that every Indian should know hindi for him to be considered a patriot, I would like to post a question: By the same argument, will you ask all of us to learn to play hockey because it is our national game?
National bird, national animal, national flower, national game, national language are symbolic. Let them all enjoy ceremonial power, nothing more. Hindi is our national language because we are a democratic nation and with due respect to its principles, that which is spoken by the majority will represent its people. Period.
India is a country where we have more languages than states. Each language has a unique culture and heritage attached to it. Let us not loose this cultural identity in the name of "nationalism". For the record, I am a staunch Indian flag waver. But, I also feel that it is only our culture that defines us more than anything else.

pithan..I agree with you on everything..but in these days, we talk about culture etc etc...but how many people know about indian culture? I see many people writing hindi, hindus etc..typical political words. In this materialistic world there is no room for culture (whether it is indian, hindu, hindustan), tolerance and other good things...even the so called hindu parties have to ape the west and talk about Indian Culture..it is painful

What is needed is a change in terminology. All languages should be declared national languages , and hindi should be the "link language".
Tulu oldest of Indian languages is fighting for inclusion in the official language list. What a tragedy !!!

Or hindi can be the official language and all others national language.Just swap the terms.Thats all.I am not against hindi as such. Many have objected to terminlogy rather than the language.
