I remember reading a phrase from a portuguese communication which says that the malabaris think of St.Thomas as Christ and worship him as such.
Perhaps what was thought as St.Thomas mightve been some local Saivite saint.
Already the archeological excavations at the St.Thomas mount at chennai point to some old temple at the site of the Church there.
Anyhow, its too early to conclude either way, unless some impartial investigation/excavation is conducted in St.Thomas church in the mount and Santhome church.
