When a lady becomes pregnant with the first child there is a celebration, Valai Kappu. What is the purpose? There is also an associated celebration "Seemandham", what is the purpose of this function? Any celebration is nice and it will be even nicer if the resoning behind the function is known.

  I dont know the "official" reason for seemandham and vaLai kaappu. Looks like these are ritual celebrations of fertility and an effort to improve the mental state of the pregnant woman. Also childbirth used to be one of the most dangerous periods for a woman and people became superstitous and institutionalized every thing that seemed to have helped. Even if you can attribute the benefits, if any, to placebo effect, it is still beneficial, I think. Sorry dont have much more concrete info.

Bangles are symbol of properity and happiness. When the husband die the bangles are broken as an act of sorrow. Happiness of a pregnant woman helps to give birth to a healthy child.   It is day in which the soul enters the womb of the child.

  That is why only first children have the right in any ceremony or karma for parents.
  
  Regarding seemandam, Some sort of liquid is squeezed in the nostrils of pregnant woman, which is supposed to safe guard the womb.
  
  Valaikappu, guess reminds the woman to be careful while she is sleeping (with its jingling sounds) ( Just a wild guess, I am not sure, may be what arul says is true)

  You kno something? Beauty isn't everything maybe we are black but there is beauty in black too but insulting another human kind and being racist is the most ugliest thing on the world i guess that specially goes to Northan Indians!
  
  By the way pal we have a beautiful culture and a glorious language which is the oldest one on the world! Try to save that and ignore those pathetic animals who think their best with no reason sadly. Ask those fools why did they copy our language if they didn't like black specially Thamizh? Think those bollywood ppl specially womens if they know the meaning of 'katpu' and ask them atleast one of them are pure good women!
