Get hold of Tenaali and try to get hold of the screenplay as well.
Before you sit down to watch it, keep the remote control handy, supress your giggles and laughs, keep a whole lot of popcorn handy, and perform a pooja to a photo of Kamal Hassan...
...and then watch the movie and try to understand each word that Kamal utters... and then, my son, you shall learn SriLankan Tamil
Velangicchaa?
Yaylum yaylum, just try.

Sri Lankan Tamil is not different from Tamil Nadu Tamil. There is only one Tamil spoken with different accent due to regional variation. This is so with regard to many other languages that include English. The English spoken by a bartender in London will not be understood even if one had lived there for fifty years.
The Tamil Kamala Hassan speaks in Thenali is the Tamil spoken by villagers about 100 years ago. These days no one speaks with that kind of accent anywhere in Sri Lanka.

I don't think accent is the only difference between Srilankan and TN Tamil. There are many usages and words that are different, based on what I observe. Maybe someone can go into the differences in more detail.

Housewife plans ‘Deeparaya (Deepavali + Hari raya or Idil Fitri’ fare for guests
BY RASLAN BAHAROM
TAIPING (North Malaysia): For housewife Umi Kalsom Arriffin, this Hari Raya will see a “Deeparaya” menu for her guests.
While she will continue to serve the normal ketupat, and beef and chicken rendang dishes, she has decided to add Deepavali delicacies to mark the Hindu festival which falls two days before Hari Raya.
Umi Kalsom, 48, shopped at the Little India stalls along Jalan Pasar and went home with 7kg of Indian sweets, muruku and milk candy from Letchu’s Sweet Shop.
“From previous experience, children who visited my house on Hari Raya prefer these stuff more than cookies,” she said.
Among other items she bought were ompodi, pagoda ladu, parpu, kerepek and chittu ourdai nuts.

The sri lankan written Tamil is same as other countries. The spoken tamil is little different. There is a Tamil radio station "www.ctr24.com" is run by sri lankan tamils. You can contact them. Also watch the tamil movie "Thenali".

Jaffna Tamil speaks Tamil very clearly as written Tamil. If you read a sentence as written, then you speak Jaffna Tamil. Period
