I happen to learn that tharmapuri, vEtharANyam, thanushkOdi, were thakadUr, thirumaRaikkAdu, and kOdikkarai respectively. I also knew the supposedly Tamil name of viruthAsAalam but I can't recall it at the moment! It would be nice if you let me know of differnt Ur's former Tamil names in TN/Kerala Thanks!

For Kerala, I can tell you this much:
Trivandrum - Thiruvananthapuram
Quilon - Kollam
Trichur - Thrissur
Cochin - Kochi
Alwaye - Aluva
Palghat - Palakkadu
Calicut - Kozhikodu

ViruthAchalam -> pazhamalai
Chidambaram -> thillai
There are few other names I knew, they are missing me at the moment. Tamils have long followed a tradition of naming places after the surroundings, flora and fauna. Unfortunately, most of these names were dropped and replaced with Sanskritized ones that had religious significance ...
Can anyone tell me what were the Tamil predecessors of the following:
Madurai
Nagapattinam
KanyAkumari
Rameswaram

Mani:
"Alwaye - Aluva "
Is this a coastal 'Ur'? Because alawAy or alwAy is a Tamil name for 'Ur's in coastal areas. alai + vAy means mouth of the waves(of ocean). So in this case the Aluva is most likly (assuming this is a coastal 'Ur') a corruption of alvAy :(
Mani, do you know any Sanskritized named 'Ur' that previously had a Tamil name of Kerala?
Pandiyan,
mathurai and kumari are pretty old names I believe (since 'kazhaka' era). Also why do you think Madurai is not a Tamil name? nAkappaddinam sounds like a Tamil name to me :!
Thanks Gopalan!
