Being South African Indian, we have a ceromony sixteen days after a persons funeral. Sixteen Lamps ar placed in a ladder shaped construction and 16 chombus, and 16 flowers. Does any one know the significance of this? Nannri Vannakum

This site does not answer your question. But it discusses funeral rights from a different perspective. Again, it does not deal with your question

every 16 days the same thithi (day after the new moon or full moon) repeats itself, so tamils have karumantaram on this day and theethu-period is said to have passed.
