Dear Pradheep,
I got an old kuthuvilakku with four faces, from my wife's family in Thirunelveli. I have never seen a k'vilakku with even number of faces. Can you kindly shed some even light on this subject.

Dear ii (@ congenital-optimist.lut.ac.uk)
first have the courage to expose your name. Tell me your cultural background and I will try to explain whether there is any sense in the things I posted in this thread.

Hi Adrian,
I saw many explanations for "Kuthuvillaku". Nanmaran answer is coincinding, but not fuly.
The five faces represents "Pancha bhootham" i.e five elements. The five elements are "Nilam" (Land), "Neer" (Water), "Katru" (Air), "Agayam" (Space), "Neruppu" (Fire).
In this Fire is a supreme element. In real world the representation of fire is "SUN" and "STARS".
Kuthuvillaku represents theese only. For further explanation you can find from siddha medical explanation. (Use below link)

It is purely a dravidian invention and foremost of all the technologies.
When Aryan invaded they steal the technology and taught us in a misleading way. That's why everybody representing this for some Aryan god. Dravidian God is only theese five elements. We do festival based on our god. For instance the festival pongal is for "Sun".

Dear Pradheep,
Your explanation was (and still is) wonderful. Don't bother about people are coming here just to create trouble. Others too have given such good explanation. Bravo to all! And again, perhaps the trouble makers and just go elsewhere.

Aagayam is not pure Thamizh.
vannam, vinN...
and btw Sun wasn't considered to be a God. Thamizh people knew what God stood for. God in Thamizh = kadavul and kadavul means someone who is beyond everything. Thus Sun wouldn't be a god since it will die one day not in our life time but one day. The sun was thanked for helping the agriculture to become a success with the mean of rain and also the energy for the plants.
