What is the significance of the kuthu villikku?

  I got an old kuthuvilakku with four faces, from my wife's family in Thirunelveli. I have never seen a k'vilakku with even number of faces. Can you kindly shed some even light on this subject.

  I saw many explanations for "Kuthuvillaku". Nanmaran answer is coincinding, but not fuly.
  
  The five faces represents "Pancha bhootham" i.e five elements. The five elements are "Nilam" (Land), "Neer" (Water), "Katru" (Air), "Agayam" (Space), "Neruppu" (Fire).
  
  In this Fire is a supreme element. In real world the representation of fire is "SUN" and "STARS".
  
  Kuthuvillaku represents theese only. For further explanation you can find from siddha medical explanation. (Use below link)

  It is purely a dravidian invention and foremost of all the technologies.

  and btw Sun wasn't considered to be a God. Thamizh people knew what God stood for. God in Thamizh = kadavul and kadavul means someone who is beyond everything. Thus Sun wouldn't be a god since it will die one day not in our life time but one day.
