In search of Tamil roots
Archis Mohan
(New Delhi, January 9)

People of Indian Origin living in the Reunion Islands are itching for a reunion with their mother country and religion.
The 2.5 lakh-odd PIOs, a third of the population of this French governed Indian Ocean island, are desperately trying to connect to their Tamil roots. Many have reconverted to Hinduism and even started practising astrology.
A group of 20 has come to attend the Pravasi Divas. "We were completely cut off from our roots as we were zealously assimilated in the French culture. But for the last 20 years we are trying to rediscover our roots," says Chanemougame Kalaitchelvane, a doctor.
Kalaitchelvane heads the Tamil Sangam, which publishes a monthly magazine in French. Ancestors of most of these PIOs went as indentured labourers from Pondicherry. Many agricultural workers from Tamil Nadu migrated to the islands after slavery was banned there in 1848.
Sitaya Anaclet, a group member, has converted to Hinduism. So has his daughter Naranma, who is studying economics at the university. "I follow Hindu customs and visit the temple regularly," says she.
Even Christian PIOs marry as per Hindu customs. There is a strong desire to learn Tamil. The language is also being taught in some schools and colleges.
For the last few years the Tamil new year and Deepawali have become the biggest festivals of the island.
The group holds India responsible for their lot. "While India established relations with Mauritius and helped it, it has ignored us. We feel like children who nobody wants, neither France our adopted country nor India our mother country," says Kalaitchelvane.

This is where the state govt of Tamil Nadu comes in.It needs to cultivate the relationship and built strong economic and cultural ties between the people of the island and Tamil Nadu.
This is one of the key areas where the Tamilnadu leadership is much wanting.

Mr.Philippe who developed this web site interested
to add a Tamil version to it. But he has no any
support. If anyone sponsor his dream then all the
Tamils can enjoy a website about Reunion Tamils in
our mother language. Malaysian may tkae initiative to bring Mr.Muthu Nedumaran of Murasu
into this objective.

TN should have a say in Indian foreign affairs when dealing with countries where there is substantial tamil population. Otherwise, one by one, tamil people in those countries will lose their identity.
