Govenders of South Africa

Can anybody share some light about "Govender"/ "Gounder".
There are many people of these surnames in South Africa, but over time, the true significance of these names have been lost.
Which part of South India do these persons come from, and any other useful information.
Thanks, Ravi Govender (Johannesburg, South Africa)

Dear Goundars, I had the good fortune of reading the thrilling biography of Mrs Muththammal Grant, a captivating narration of her parents migrating to Malaysia 80years ago.It vividly portrays many of our kongku traits and the consequences thereof. I am eagerly awaiting the tamil version of `Shore to Shore` and also the publication of her collecion of the folklore collected from the malaysian kongku gounders. She is a great lady, whom I revere much.Muthukumaraswamy
