  VellAlar are tillers (agriculturalists) who have contributed immensly to Hinduism and Tamil Literature. Nammalwar, was an Isai Vellalar and is the kulapathi for iyengar brahmins. Many of the Nayanmars (Shaiva Saints) were also vellAlars.

  Not much difference. M S Subbulakshmi is a VellAlar not brahmin.
