hmm,
Thats really odd. Raveen, are you saying (or the article) that the name ayyapan for shashta is only 300 years old? I did not know that, in our ancestral home in kerala, where we also have a temple which was built by the then king for our family. It is about 400 years old, we call it shastha koil. Now it makes sense!! WOW thanks man.

In summary:
----------
Evidently the deity at Sabarimalai seems to have been Siva who was metamorphosed into Avalokitesvara, who was the Dharma Sasta (One of the Dhyani-Buddhas). Ayyappan is the apotheosis of Ayyan Adigal, the Chera king of Venad who was supposed to have merged with the deity of Dharma-sasta. The Hari-Hara putra (Sivan and Mohini's son) myth seems to have been woven over this. Also the myth of the child left by the river with a bell on his neck (Manikandan = Ayyappan) is also repeated.
Quiz: How may great personalities in history were found abandoned by the river as infants?
Kulasekara Alwar of Thiruvaimozhi fame, Cheraman Perumal Nayanar of Periyapuranam fame and Ayyan Adigal as Lord Ayyappan=Shasta. Wow, the Cheran Kings knew how to combine the duties of a ruler along with their spiritual quest! They truly were Aandavar!!
Raveen,
On a side note: If we look at the period of history, when the Pandya kings were overthrown by the Kallapirars, it was the aadhikkam of the Chozhas. Were the Kallapirars that you mention related to the Chozhas of Thanjavur and descendants or extended family of Rajendra Chozhan?

Venky,
I need to find out more about the Pandalam pricipality than what I have read on the internet. There is one authority Dr. Karnam Pillai of Kerala who has written extensively about it. I will try to locate his email and ask for further information.
If what the Pandalam kings are saying is true, then after all the Tamil aristrocratic lineage did not die off as our regular history books say. I am surprised that not too many maintream historians have noted this living dynasty in Kerala.

Hello,
I'm Moorthy, New Delhi. I've one doubt. Sasta took birth to kill Mahishi, a demoness. In what yug this was occurred? If it is in Kaliyug, there is no standard history abt. it. In one portion of his story, it was told he changed the muslim robber in to a good man as well as his friend, so his Darkha is there in Sabarimala. That means, Shasta was in between 9th-10th Century. If it is so, there is no trace of Mahishi lived in any other historical stories or events. Kindly explain any one.

Can anybody clarify?
