What does the tamil word "Pavazham" means? Apparently it is some sort of shell or coral but not too sure. Hope someone can help?

I do not find any beauty in this stone, of course beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Are there any other reasons (other than beauty or lack of it) why this stone is so popular in India.

Pavazham is said to have some medicinal properties, just like gold.

Pavazham is coral. Its chemical composition is calcium carbonate. The coral reefs under the oceans are made up of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is white. The different tints of pavazham are due to the inclusion of other metallic ions such as iron. For that matter even pearl(muthu) is pure calcium carbonate.

Vazhipokkan (your name reminds me of porambokku in Tamil movies :))
So what would be the medicinal value of wearing calcium carbonate?

It could be the trace minerals that are included in Coral that might be responsible for the claimed medicinal properties.
Salt from the sea, for example, is mostly Sodium Chloride, but the trace minerals in sea salt is what makes it different from pure sodium chloride!
Marble is also Calcium Carbonate; but marble is not perl.

Please read 'perl' as pearl.
