I am a tamil living in Australia
There is kind of a caste system here too.
The rich people who speak english and marry white avoid the newer, poorer tamils.
They fight about who built the murugan temple.
They try to out do, compete, SHOW OFF with other tamils in studies as well as in popularity.

Caste, unfortunately has become a pan-South Asian phenomenon:

Dear HHHHHHHHHHHHH
I am not saying that caste system is a good thing or that it is still relevant to modern societies.
But I think there is no harm in being more informed about the subject. You will be then be able to make an informed decision on the issue. I would take Karuvayan's advice and read up more on the Caste System's past.
We will then be in a better position to examine things that are happening at present and set the bet direction for the future.

HHH...H,
"The rich people who speak english and marry white avoid the newer, poorer tamils."
It is not caste system, it is called Class system. In Class system, any one with money can move up. The caste system is based on birth, and there is no opportunity to inter-marry.

Who says there is no opportunity to intermarry. If the boy and girl of different caste want to marry, they can do so. Law protects them.

Cool it HHHHHHHHH!
I think we know what you mean. No need to get worked up mate!
Since I am not very familiar about the Australian situation, my comments would based a lot on conjceture and suppositions.
I think we are dealing with alienation to the Tamil/Indian culture and the cultural gap which has built up over the generations is the basic problem here. That gap will close over the next few decades.
As for the "Who will build the Murugan Temple?" issue........I think it is a problem not only Australia...it is a common phenomena wherever we have settled. We brought it with us from our homeland.........it all started there and still is exists there!

Yes, there are many good laws on the book. What percent of our people are marrying outside of their caste and religion? Unless we improve our economy and education, it is hard for the young to jump that barrier.

I agree with you 100% but don't blame caste system for it. Unless our society encourages opposite sex to meet, there will not be much love marriage. Love marriage is the only answer for intercaste marriage.

caste is crude type of class only. not just in tamil culture, found all over India and also all othr countries. japanaes have "eta" oppressed caste. chinese consider japanaese and koreans as inferior just like ksshatrya treat backward class. worse is they also expect such feeling and look up to chinese. abos treated as schedule tribe by australians. germans think polish and other neighbours are belonging to inferior caste type. there is no end to this "we are better than you" mentality. only people with self doubting take this to extremes. both ways. but world over, will clarify to economic class soon. good night thank you.

We brahmins are the high cast humanbeings. The Sri Lankan VellaLas know about Brahmins and their supperiority of their cast wellmore than the people in Tamil Nadu. That is why the Sri Lankan vellaLa fall at our feet when they come across us. Even at the feet of a small brahmin boy the VellaLas fall and prey them, because they know that the Bramins are not second to God the Parb brahmam. People should know this.

Hi Rishi,
(((((We brahmins are the high caste humanbeings))))
You are a mad dog, isn't?
Watch your words! Before u write, anything!
KSHATRIYAS protected you for many centuries in the past.
If NO KSHATRIYANS ,There were No BRAMINS would exist.
YOU just a coolie in the Temple in order to serve the other castes.
I think enough !!!!!!!
NOW, YOU read WHAT BUDDHA had said long ago!!!!!
O Brahmin!
The person who wears a robe made of rags, who is lean, with veins showing all over the body, and meditates alone in the forest ---
him do i call a Brahmin ( holy man)
I do not call him a Brahmin ( holy man) because of his lineage or high-born mother. If he is full of impeding attachments, he is just a supercilious man. But who is free from impediments and clinging --- him do i call a Brahmin ( holy man)
He who, having cut off all fetters, trembles no more, who has overcome all attachments and is emancipated --- him do i call a Brahmain
He who is free from anger, is devout, virtuous, without craving, selfsubdued and bears his final body --- him i call a Brahmin.
Like water on a LOTUS leaf, or a mustard seed on the point of a needle, he who does not cling to sensual pleasures --- him do i call a Brahmin.
HE who has profound knowledge, who is wise, skilled in discerning the right or wrong path, and has reached the highest goal --- him do i call a Brahmin.
He who holds aloof from house holders and ascetics alike, and wanders about with no fixed abode and but few wants --- him do i call a Brahmin.
Still, have more to write, but i stop here !!
NOW, do you know who is Brahmin
I don't think, you understand,Because Brahmin does not EXIST!!!
