Srilankan tamil is very close to written-tamil than spoken-tamil(mostly slangs) in tamilnadu. Mallus spoken-malayalam is close to written-tamil (or may be written-malayalam). Thats why it sounds same.

We Srilankan Tamils are from the all three Tamil kingdoms, Chera, Chozha, and Pandiya’s. But I think majority of our ancestors are from Chozha mandalam. Srilankan Tamil sounds very close to Malayalam because our Tamil is unspoiled version of old Tamil spoken in ancient Tamil kingdoms.
" Srilankan Tamil dialect was the most pure, the closest remaining cousin to the Tamil that was spoken in the ninth century India, a tongue that had been referred to, in the classical literature of the time as " a goddess." The Tamil language they claimed was the oldest, richest, most copious, refined and polished language spoken by man - more polished than Greek, more copious than Latin." of all the Dravidian tongues, Tamil is the most fitted to be the instrument of exact thought” wrote one linguist. (Ref: The Tragedy of Srilanka – William Mccowan)
“It is impossible for any European who has acquired a competent knowledge of Tamil to it regard otherwise than with a respect for intellectual capacity of a people among whom so wonderful an organ of thought has been developed.”
(Italian born Jesuit priest Beschi, Constantino Giuseppe aka Weramamunivar 1680 – 1747)

"more polished than Greek, more copious than Latin"
are you sure it was about tamil? i think it is how william jones described sanskrit in 1786.
"the wonderful structure of the Sanskrit language is more perfect than the Greek, more copious than the Latin, and more exquisitely refined than either,"

I guess it is the other way round. Malayalam would have originated from Sri Lankan Tamil!

That was the excerpt from the book called "The Tragedy of Srilanka, by William Mccowan, former Editor of the Washington monthly. PAGE 173.
I am not a linguist.

I didnt get your joke? You spoke like being from TN is worse then being from Kerala? If SL hail from Kerala or TN, makes no difference, it was just news to me that they came from Melabar Coast, which is in Kerala. Anyways, its all the same, TN and Kerala is the same. Although TN is special, cuz its the biggest film industry state of the south indian states, its got more be proud of. If you are a film lover anyway :) Not saying that Kerala has nothing to be proud of :)

But I personally feel that, Kerala produces more quality film than Tamilnadu as many tamil movies are dubbed from Malayalam.

the meaning of my joke was (well, i never thought things would go to this extent!) that malayalam is a language about a thousand years old at the outset; but the srilankan tamils claim a heritage of two thouand years and more; so they would be surely annoyed to find their history suddenly halved! so they will attack the proposer of this idea ! (whew!)

gopalan,
That is true, Thamizh and even Telugu have been remaking movies from Malayalam lately, but there is nothing wrong with that, if I watch a Tamil movie, I can relate to it, as if it is a Malayalam movie, but with more action.

Mr. Gopalan,
I wanted to say,
The percentage of tamil films dubbed/remade from malayam is more than the percentage of malayalam films dubbed/remade from Tamil.

mr mani,
i dont think it is a crime not to be aware of the tastes of the people when you are away from the state for many years! :-) anyway, thanks for updating; i only hope the change is for the better.

Thiru gopalan,
Of course it isn't a crime, that is why you have to look into the tastes of people up to this day. :)
The change should be better, Tamil people and Kerala people are the same.

You mean Kandigas and Telugus? Our language is Telugu not Andhra. You could say Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh( not Andhra).

The vellAlAs are the majority in the Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka. These people think they are the highest cast. They also think the bramins are higher than them and due to this reason these vellAlAs worship bramins. They fall at the bramins feets and worship them to receive their
blessings. Due to this reason the Sri Lankan bramins each and every one of them feel as if they are Lord Siva. Even a small boy of that cast have the same feelings. This is a great fun .

Sri Lankans (Both Sinhalese and Tamils) now hide their KERALA connections.
Portugeuse brought in thousands of Malayalees from MALABAR and other areas for the tobacco cultivation. Even today the Tobacco society known as MALAYALA PUGAYILAI SANGAM in Jaffna. Those Malayalees later became Vellalas during the dutch period.
Eastern Sri Lanka is full of MUKKUVA population.
MUKKUWA LAW is the equivalent of Jaffna's Thesa Valamai which based on Malayala Marumakka Thayam and other malayala customs.
KURUPPU is a well known name in Kerala. Thousands of KURUPPUS live as Sinhalese in Sri lanka.
TAMIL was introduced as the language of instruction in schools by late prime minister S W R D Bandara nayake, father of the present president but Tamils of Sri lanka always blame for the introduction of Tamil language.
