Tamils across the globe should unite in order to be recognised as a strong economic and political force, a community leader says.
"A proposed international Tamil flag and anthem has been launched, and these should be used as unifying tools," said Sinathumbi Chelliar, president of the International Movement for Tamil Culture.
Chelliar was speaking at the 8th International Conference on Tamil Culture here. About 500 delegates representing Tamil communities in Canada, Germany, Norway, Malaysia, India, the U.S., Denmark and South Africa are attending the event.
Chelliar said: "We shouldn't think of ourselves as Indian Tamils or South African or Malaysian Tamils or Tamils from any particular country or region. "Each one of us should proudly say: 'I am a world Tamil. My community is the Tamil community.' Go forward under this flag and anthem to build a strong community that will be respected by the world at large."
Chelliar said the IMTC was politically non-partisan and did not object to efforts by any political party unless these parties affected the development of Tamil culture and language.
He also espoused the creation of a Tamil World Development Bank. "This is necessary for Tamil posterity.
Think of how the Jewish community has developed -they were downtrodden at one stage, but are a big force today. Even the U.S. is afraid of them because of their economic control," he said.
Tamils must develop themselves along the same lines by prospering in every country. They must support any Tamil who can come up anywhere, he remarked.
Explaining the development of the Tamil flag and anthem, Chelliar said the flag is a heritage flag.
"It depicts the symbols of the Tamil kings who ruled us -- the bow and arrow, tiger, fish and veena. There is also the bull; the emblem of Indus civilisation, and the flag is decorated with a depiction of the rising sun, which was worshipped by our forefathers since it was so essential to them as farmers."
A Tamil scholar from Canada, Uthayakaren Thurairajah, composed the national anthem. It lauds the past achievements of the Tamil civilisation and its future aspirations. Canada's government has honoured Thurairajah for his efforts.

First of all I would like to tell the person who put this thread and to all the tamil bashers that tamils are not parochial bunch of people like the kannadigas who have their own flag which is insult to our nationhood every where in karnataka you find thei flag even in places like apublic sector industry like ITI bel which is every sense a national property.my sincere advice to all tamils is that be as enterprising as possible and spread to far away as possible since w have always beenan enterprising lot and heaven sake do not give any overrt importance to any non personalities like filmstars whether they are tamilor not.

I'd like to second the suggestion that the "timing" of uniting 'as an economic force' is problematic. There is a great deal of suspicion on the part of Tamils who are not Sri Lankan, that there is always a hidden agenda behind such calls.
The Canadian Security Agency (CSIS) has for quite some time monitored the activities of the World Tamil Organization and FACT -- organisations run by SL Tamils. The findings have indicated that monies have been siphoned form these organisions and used to fund terrorist activities. In addition there has been evidence of a lot of illegal drug pushing activity.
The daily paper, The National Post , here in Canada, has run a number of articles on the activities of the SL Tamils in these organisations. http://www.nationalpost.com/national/story.html?id={62D750F9-9D5A-4B32-B413-88E8C04F5D09}
A recent SL Tamil drug pusher has been ordered deported and legislation will soon be introduced in Parliament that may result in the banning these organisations.
In the past, there have been reports of rival SL Tamil gangs shooting it up in Toronto; recently, there has been a ruckus about an attempted LTTE takeover of a Hindu Temple in Toronto.

AJ, come join me as we inch towards organising mind colonies, including the transformation of since 1995, Thamil Innaiyam, into a mind colony.
What are mind colonies? Think of them as parallel to ant colonies. Or as ageographical villages.
Mind colonies are self-sustaining cross-media networked mind cooperatives for shared-ethos groups, where minds are catalysed by and to, to learn, play and work together, with card-based exchange-guaranteed multilateral barter as currency.
The first mind colonies in the world are likely to be for Tamils -- we'll see. Check out the following URLs for more:-

What a brilliant idea. Uniting all poor Tamils and one can start a Tamil Development Bank. The Dravidians are just waiting for such a bank. I would like to get a job in this bank. True to Dravidian tradition I will become, a very rich person overnight. We will have to keep out Dr. JJ and DR. Shtalin as they are more experienced in stealing than I am.
If all the backwards get together and you add up the I.Q., then no ONE person can match with the total number of 60 million people. You get all the Tamils together all 60 million of them then the combined assets will be enough to start a small development bank which together with Dr. Krishna, we will be able to clean it up in an hour with no one the wiser. Of course we will need advise from C. Subramaniam as Moopanar is dead( Indian Bank).
