I cannot believe this is happening in Tamil Nadu

Madurai, April 29: A tense situation prevailed at Melayur village in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu today with the police allegedly remaining indifferent to the attacks on Dalits in which five members of the Thiagi Imanuel Peravai were injured and several houses damaged since March 27.
According to P Chandra Bose, general secretary of the Peravai, the trouble began when local Dalit youth objected to the ‘two-tumbler system’: one set of tumblers for caste Hindus and one for Dalits, in all the local hotels and gave a complaint to the police who immediately raided the shops and seized the tumblers.
However, after the tumblers were seized, the majority caste Hindus began a ‘social boycott’ of all the 19 Dalit families in the village and refused to give milk and groceries to them, he told reporters here today.
Bose said the police did not care to end the social boycott and postponed the talks convened to ease the tension for three days after making the Dalits and caste Hindus wait for a long time.
A section of the caste Hindus who got irritated did not allow the Dalits to celebrate the Ambedkar birth anniversary. They attacked with deadly weapons those who arranged for the celebration injuring five persons.
Though the police registered cases against 43 persons, they did not arrest anyone, leading to a second attack in which Dalit colonies were looted, Bose said.

let me tell you a relatively recent incident.
Koreans hate the Japanese and Japanese hate Koreans.
Korean Japanese relation took a major turn when, the death of a Korean student studying in Japan greatly touched the Japanese people. Korea University student Lee Su-hyon sacrificed himself while trying in vain to save a drunken Japanese man who fell onto the tracks of a Tokyo subway, becoming a "bridge," as was his desire, between the two peoples.

one young Man look at the response from Japanese
Japanese people show an explosive interest in the late Lee Su-Hyun, 26, a Korean student who met his fate, breaking their hearts, while trying in vain to save a drunken Japanese citizen who had fallen on a subway track. It is too sad that a courageous action will be forgotten some day, a housewife in her 40's said. A man in his 70's said: There has been no impressive news like his in recent days. The (Japanese) people should give a letter of thanks.
These and other similar messages of citizens are flooding the Japanese newspapers and broadcasting companies. Japanese newspapers are making headlines with Lee's stories every day. Each paper, including Asahi Shimbun, even announces bank account numbers to raise condolence money for the Korean student who sacrificed himself. Broadcasting firms are no exception. They are concentrating on illuminating Lee's sense of justice in their special programs day after day.
In terms of the sense of justice, the Japanese cameraman in his 40's who jumped to the track along with Lee also should be praised. But reports about Lee overwhelm those of the other man. Why? We can feel the sense of respect toward young Koreans in the enthusiastic reaction of the Japanese. I got to feel familiar with Korea that produced a good young man, a man in his 60's said. A man in his 70's said, Young Koreans have the Confucian spirit making them to do their best for others. A man in his 50's said, Thinking of my first son of the same age, I prayed for Lee's soul with a really grateful mind.
Japan's older generation of today looks with daggers at young people. They argue that young Japanese are adrift, losing not only dreams and hopes but also the care for others and patriotic sentiments. Japanese society seems to find that these are the very things that the young ones of the nation lost through the death of Lee.
The remarks by Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori that he'd like to have Lee be a model for young Japanese people speaks for the mind of the older generation of Japan. Lee used to say that he wanted to become a bridge between Korea and Japan, according to his family and friends. His dream cannot come true now to our deep regret, but it seems to be taking roots in Japan through his death.

Zulu,
There are so many people in India who save others like that incident in Japan. However They dont go around giving the identity based on caste. So maybe a dalit helped a brahmin but the dalit is not going to announce that "hey I am a dalit and I helped this brahmin" or the Brahmin who saves a dalit is not going to announce the same. Even if they announce we belittle the community by saying taht oh they are an exception. SO bad blood between communities can only be fixed by actively educating the communities.
I will tell you of situation that I see in India even today. I have frequently seen (even in BC houses) people having a seperate cup for the servant.. Why do they do that? when some friend come into your house you gladly show off your good cups right? Also if you have noticed lot of households dont allow their servants to use the bathrooms, as if the bathroon is going to be destroyed by them, afterall they are the ones who clean it right? these are small things that you see even today. The same people, however, when they come to the US change their ways. Why is that? There is an inherent stigma we have with "menial" labor which must stop. So the instance mentioned in this thread is just an extension of this. However this servant thing is not based on caste but the principles are the same, even in educated city living families of any caste!!!!

zulu,
you said:
TC,
Why the Church in INDIA has not condemned the killings of Muslims in Gujarat? Don’t they know that they are the next to be torched?
Church should have condemned it, if not its a huge mistake. i thought atleast George Fernandes would have pushed for removal of modi's facisit regime and he has not done it either. Generally, whatever church does/did in Gujarat has been distorted by its press, as was done during earthquake relief efforts by the church.
Here is the problem in Gujarat. A few percentage of hindu fanatics supported by the state machinery is showing its facist nature. It affects the good hindus (world over). It will create militant outfits in minority communities and God will take a back seat from then on. Consider what happened in srilanka. it took 16 years for srilanka to see a peace plan now. RSS and its outfits will be SOLELY responsible for minorities turning to militant nature. Wish and pray great india realizes the trap laid by RSS and its outfits.
---------------
dalits in christian communities are discriminated also. This matter has been reported to pope and matters related to caste discrimination in chruch in india is getting better. Atleast, christianity in principle abhors caste division, which is not the case in Hinduism and thats very dangerous. True, most Hindus are tolerant, but whats the use if their religion preaches intolerance using caste. Prominenet Hindus and Hindu groups should abolish caste in their religion.

>> I think lot of people have left this forum because of preachers (like you) and the fights that start there of.
They dont need to. I am sharing what i knew about christianity, you can take it or leave it or ignore it. My fore fathers were hindus from villages of dindigul in tn and i discuss christianity as a raw thamilan, and a dravidan. Infact i am very appreciative of my fellow hindus for their great tolerance and spiritual values that i say is 'mun vaasanai'. MK Gandhi is a perfect example. ( i guess i am testing your patience, so i am quiting for now). take it easy man/woman.

TC,
I believe 'Christians have a moral authority to stand up against injustice against poor, voice less, and father less'. Jesus did not look at injustice and judge them.
Jesus Said quoted from the Bible
Do you think that these Galileans (Gujaraties) were worse sinners than all the other Galileans (Indians or Tamil Christians) because they suffered this way? I tell you, no!, Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no!
And do not talks to me about "GEORGE 'THE MONKEY' FERNANDES". He said in the parliament "Stories are being told about Gujarat violence as if it was happening for the first time. Did it not happen in 1984 on the roads of Delhi?"
Stories ?
Do you think he is a 'Christian' you must be kidding?

dont preach!,
I don't think TC is preaching. He is just putting forth his own views shaped by his religion. If he preaches you have the option to ignore him. Yep I do know a few racist Babtists in Texas who preached to me (they "encourage" people not to inter-marry between races - nice way of saying it). But that does not make all Chrisitians bad.

Zulu,
Fernandes is just too greedy to let go of his hold to power now. Indian Politicians of whatever religion just want power (even tho they may have been good @ first once they taste power its like they go over to the Dark Side).

tamil christian,
please start separate thread to share ur views on christianity.
u can do it in other thread also.
refer these sankrit verses:
mamopatha samastha thuritha kshaya dhwara sri paremeshwara preethyartham pratha sandhya mupasishye.
this means i start praying the god sandyadevi in morning, i want to get the blessing of god by destroying all sins i did.
hence jesus must have learnt this prose when he was in himalayas. and started preaching forgiving sins by the trinity.( on lighter side) my inference is :all relegions have good points ok? not only christianity

with respect to the attack on dalits. the best way to eliminate religious apartheidism which is a synonym for the caste system is to not embrace the religion that sponsors it. if the 19 dalit families adopt another religion, the brahmins in that village automatically lose their 'elite' status and will think twice before picking on their new christian or muslim brethren.
