Is Namaskaram Tamil word? What is the meaning of the word Vanakam? If I'm not mistaken those days people say Panikraganam (it sounds something like that,I can't remember at the moment)instead of Vanakam. Is it True?

Dear Ragu,
Namaskaram and Vanakkam both means "salutation". Namaskaram is the Sanskrit version and the Vanakkam is the Tamil version of same.
I am interested in knowing about the other word you have referred above the Panikraganam.
Was it used earlier in Tamil Nadu ?? Is it a term used in Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam meaning the "salutation" ?? Plese advice

Dear R.Sri Hari.
I've heard the word Panikraganam (something sounds like that) when I was still in my primary school. I can't remember who was that, he said this was the word used instead of Vanakam by some category of people in Tamil Nadu. But I don't know how true is this. Thats why I raise this issue here.
Tq for your kind explanation

"Namaskaram" is used by Malayalees. But in Malaysia, everyone (regardless Tamil, Malayalee, Telegu etc) use "Vanakam". ... But then, not many Indians in Malaysia use it because they prefer "hello" and such.

Vanakkam for low grade people and Namaskar for being used by higher groups like Brahmanas and Vellalas

There is no such thing a this as :
"Vanakkam for low grade people and Namaskar for being used by higher groups like Brahmanas and Vellalas" Deluded people think that if they use Sanskrit words, that means they are of higher caste.
I do not know what Namaskar means.
But Vanakkam means "I am saluting to the One within you". Which means we are saluting God who is one with soul(uyir).
According to Saiva siddhantam, God is never separate from uyir. That is why we say vanakkam to a person holding our palms together just like praying.

Please don't take this Velu (alias Karthi) character seriously. This poor fellow wants to invent history to feel good about himself. There is nothing wrong if he was born to a prostitute. It was not his fault and he had no choice in that matter. So, please pity him. May be, you could send him a dollar or two to help him buy some cyanide from the LTTE kids so that he could finally find some peace of mind.

Saranya, if you greet with a vanakam to all other Indians, then I salute you! But to be fair to Uthaya, most of do make do with a simple hello.
