It is a form of indigenous martial arts that is popular mostly in Kerala now. But forms of it are used throughout India in one form or the other.

Karthik-I,
As far as I know, there is no kalarippayattu taught in San Francisco area. As for LA, about once or twice a year two fellows from the Vallabhatta Kalari in Kerala, Krishnadas & Dinesan conduct workshops. They are very knowledgeable and experienced from my non-expert point of view. Their email is: vallabhatta@yahoo.co.in.
USA does not much in the realm of kalarippayattu. Britain has a few people, but you have to be careful. For example, there's a fellow named Phillipp Zarrilli who knows quite a bit and even wrote a good book, but he doesn't know the vaithari (the called commands in Malayalam). The best place to go, of course, is Kerala. I would recommend the CVN Kalari in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) as it is the best known in the capital of Kerala.

There are two styles of kalari: northern and Southern. if you want to study the use of weapons, i would recommend the northern style, which you can learn from CVN kalari, Trivandrum or up north in tellicherry, and if you want to study the art of hand-to-hand combat, marma adi, verum kai, etc, then i would recommend the southern. There are no shortage for Ashans in Trivandrum district for the southern style. There is also a central kerala style, but it did nto seem very impressive to me,a dn I stopped learning it after a few months. In the west, you may find it hard to locate good Ashans. probalby, you will have to go to kerala.

Kalaripayattu, a most sophisticated martial, is not, however, the "mother of all MAs." It is only the mother of Indian KALARIPAYATTU. It is not the "mother" of African or European MAs.

Kenneth, Regarded as the oldest and most scientific in the world, kalaripayattu, the martial art form of Kerala, is an integral of the Malayali culture.
Bodhidharama, a Buddist monk, who visited China during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Ling dynasty, is believed to have presented the world with a self-defense system; from which evolved almost all the present day martial are forms. Scholars believe that his philosophy was influenced by the ancient martial culture of malabar - kalaripayattu the mother of all martial arts.
