Tamil Language & Social Status

All Tamils throughout the World "should always speak in Tamil Language" with the other Tamils.
The God, or any Prophet, or any World Religion, never said that it was "below dignity" to speak in Tamil Language with fellow Tamils, but only in the "Elocution and accent filled English" in order to command the respect of the others in the Society, and to move with chest forward in the elite circles "imitating as persons coming from "socially reformed Tamil Societies".
English is only a Language of communication used by us to converse with the other Communities of the World speaking different Languages, and to communicate with each other in connection with Trade, Science, Technology, Social and Cultural Exchanges.
Hence I call upon the "foolish lot" among the Tamils throughout the World who live on false sense of values, to respect the English Language "only" as as a universal communication Language and not as the Language of Social Status.
Hence be proud - to talk and communicate with all Tamils throughout the World in Tamil Language, that too in beautiful "Elocution Tamil", and to talk in English Language, "only" with those who have as their mother tongue a different Language other than Tamil, and thereby not knowing to coverse in Tamil Language.
Be proud to speak in Tamil, and also to behave socially as a Tamil.

The latest Microsoft browsers (5.0 and above) break TSCII's ikaram and aq. You can verify this by setting your default font to a TSCII font in User defined mode and visiting the page:
http://studenti.ing.unipi.it/doc/html32be/latin1.html
and
http://studenti.ing.unipi.it/doc/html32be/3_1.html#chars
You will see all but 2 TSCII characters.
In theory, one should be able to overcome this by replacing the TSCII's ikaram with
"" (believe me there is something within the double quotes) or which is really "soft hyphen". When it is represented with either of the entity escape character representation, the browser is supposed to leave it alone and render it as is. But, MSIE doesn't do that. It uses is as a soft hypen and eats it most of the time, but on occasion you will see it when it thinks that hyphening is not needed. AaraamthiNai has figured out how to beat it. (You will see that the AaraamthiNai pages first come through without the ikaram but the ikaram show up quickly. They are still using TSCII.)
The INFITT working groups are working hard to integrate the competing specifications TSCII and TAB/TAM and are very, very close to a common encoding specification. Once that happens, we will have a reasonable encoding standard that all of us can live with. But the question is, will the vendors support the new specification, will they be ready to migrate their existing pages to this unified standard? There are diehard adherents to both specifications that may not migrate. And of course there are those who don't follow ANY standard.
Ultimately, it is all in your hands - the users. If you pressure the vendors they will budge. But if they don't we will have Unicode.
Jai, let us not be too hasty about criticising Unicode Tamil encoding. Though it may have been recommended by a Government of India standards body, GOI has recognized that Tamil is an international language and has allowed the Government of Tamilnadu to represent Tamil in the Unicode consortium. Since there are more Tamils in Tamilnadu than any other Tamil speaking state, the rest of us are looking to Tamilnadu for leadership. Oh yes, we all have strong opinions and have expressed them in the INFITT working groups. And the Government of Tamilnadu has promised to repect the recommendations of the INFITT working groups.
If you want to know more about the Unicode Tamil encoding issues, I strongly recommend you to look up the INFITT discussions on it. Or you can e-mail me in private.

I composed my posting in an editor, and when I got into this thread to post it, I saw Mani's post which may make some of the info in my post redundant. So excuse the redundancy. But I am glad Mani is back!!

My settings are: Encoding - Western European; Language script - Latin Based; WEB page font - Maduram TSC;
I am never able to see ikaram kuRil. I should think seriously about the suggestion made by Vasan/Vijay - Switch to Netscape.

Jai: I am trying to share my thoughts here. I am no expert in UNICODE. But because of Tamil font encoding, I used to follow it about 3 years ago. There were hot discussions in Tamil.net. But then my priorities changed, and I have not followed this issue since. Lack of expertise hasn't usually stopped me from opining. So why should I stop now. ;-) So here I go. The URL for UNICODE consortium: http://www.unicode.org/
Jai wrote: My very limited understanding of this UNICODE thing is that it is a system by which every character in every language would be assigned a unique 32 bit code.
It is 16 Bit encoding, unless it has changed recently. And this can usually be transformed to an 8 bit version UTF-8.
Jai wrote: I remember reading that the Govt of India (or one of its agencies) made a recommendation to the UNICODE authority based on which 128 slots each were alloted for all major Indian languages including Tamil. Brushing aside the question whether GOI is justified in deciding what is best for Tamil, especially when there are other countries which have Tamil as official language, I wish to know who is presently representing the interests of Tamil before the UNICODE body.
Tamil Nadu Govt. initially promoted 'Tamil Inaiyam 98' and Dr.Anadakrishnan was one of the key personalities. He was later assigned to represent Tamil Nadu Govt./Tamil in the Unicode conferences. I am not sure who does that now. And it is not clear that they could effect changes in that forum.
Jai wrote: I also read that it would be better if we can have enough number of slots so that all the 247 letters (I mean the "uyirmei" combinations) could be represented. Is somebody trying to get the additional slots for Tamil?
It is true that there was an attempt to get 247 slots or perhaps even more. But even the Tamil technical community was divided on this need. Nevertheless, I don't think they had enough clout to get 247 slots. The slots now allocated for Tamil is 0B80 to 0BFF.
Jai wrote: When is UNICODE expected to come into effect? Are the existing schemes like TSCII, TAB etc just stop gap arrangements?
There is no one cut off date. It is a gradual thing. Some of the Microsoft products already implement UNICODE system. I am sure there are others. But there is no Tamil pages, products in UNICODE, that I am aware of. TSCII, TAB etc are probably going to give way to UNICODE eventually. But that may be a long way off.
Mani Manivannan is a resident expert. (Atleast more knowledgeable than me). He is in some of the committees. He was even exploring if a 'Tamil Inaiyam' conference could be held in USA. (Incidentally, the next 'Tamil Iniyam' conference is in Malaysia in August 2001. Being in Singapore, it shouldn't be too far for you).

People speak in english to avoid being mistaken for uneducated ph.D.,doctors and engineers. In Tamil Nadu and Bihar one can get degrees without going to college and getting through the examination by giving bribes and also on caste considerations. Good examples are Dr. Misa Yadav and Dr. Shtalin. After Misa Yadav got her MBBS degree in first class the Patna Medical College professors took out a procession in protest claiming that they had never heard of or seen her, and she definately did not attend college but was listed as one of their graduates. In Tamil Nadu thsi is the norm and no one even raises an eyebrow for a similar news. To distinguish themselves from these kinds of graduates one speaks in english rather thann bhojpuri or Tamil. If you do not want to be identified with these class of people than you speak in english and you use a psuedonym like the hero from Madurai. Once the Madurai Hero himself claimed that he was a merit candidate! There is nothing wrong in that.

HERO:
Do not even try it-wearing a poonal. It will not change you. It is like putting whipped cream on SHIT. It is still shit.
What will help however is a little bit of study and hard work, if you have the brains then you will not evenm need reservations.

Sid,
"Do not even try it-wearing a poonal. It will not change you. It is like putting whipped cream on SHIT."
I am happy that you understood finally. I wonder why all those who wear them today dont have your enlightenment that that is what it looks like on them. If that enlightenment was there, yes, there truely would have been no need for reservations.
