I am trying to teach my husband to speak Tamil. There are lots of books to teach him to read and write Tamil.

But is there a methodical way to help him speak or at least understand spoken Tamil? I would love to speak my mother tongue at home.

  If you have some problem with Thamizh and Thamizh people and TN ...you better watch your comments.
  Nowday Political life affect all human beings around the Globe and including Thamizhans and the fact is that Even Thamizh politicans aren't going to bring Brightness to Thamizh people or to the world. Everyone is eager for power, everyone want to rule, everyone want THEIR children and generation to be happy and doesn't give a thing to others!!( lot of people are ) and shamefully it's the same with TN and don't birch about TN and Thamizh culture under nowday circumstances where it's standing weakly and this is not the time where Thamizh people were looked down by others and by themselves...it has been happening ever since the Late Sanga Literature and from the Pallavars time! I don't know if some of you are Thamizh or non-Thamizh or non-humans or some fools who just don't have anything to do and just sit and comments on others...I think for a change you should try to change your self and perhaps that will benifit you very much so it'll beneifit the entire world! Anyway Thamizhans aren't in a worse situation like most of the Africans, Middle East, South American and East Asian (excluding China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore)! Political errors happened and still happen allwhere but countries like USA or any European Countries doesn't get affected by it because people who live their doesn't get hurt by any bribing that's going on blurly behind the screen and or supporting other countries like Canada does to USA and in Public notifing it doesn't (no idea why) Anyway TN is part of what you call CDS (Crazy Democratic System) which underlies in the Central Government power of India. Now if you look at South Asia not only in Thamizh society but in lot of the societies people don't want others to get high whether they get little higher or not...it's what called Jealousy and far beyond it. Now there are issues related to Rebels to Politicans and if you look deeply then you'll rebels start with the say "We are freeing us and our people and we shall sacrifice...and the leaders take care of Their childrens well!" Now you see the Politicans say that they will improve the society and culture...and so on ...even in North america and their speech is so strong and we accept them as our leaders and the years progress with no improvements at all...one factor for is: It's how democracy work and the other is they might not be holding their own word after getting excited about the fact they have became as a leader. Now there is a country I know that's in South Asia that's politically worse and Dominate all minorities and very forceful and that is 'India' and I know rebellions and people who suffer and are dominated by people who sometime get selfish and power thirsty and that is the country known as 'Sri Lanka'. Now don't come to a conclusion that Thamizhans in these coutnries are responsible for such a tragedy in these nations because it's half Thamizhans fault and half goes to the dominant society in the certain country or in 'India' socities. Now improving TN would mean educating the people and it can't happen and won't happen because of Politic..because I think lot of the politicans want the people to be illiterated so these people remain gullible and live the life of peasants. Similarly in Eezham the Sri Lankan government won't let Thamizh people to have their own state and control themselves and also there is a power thirsty inside Thamizh people that won't let them go under one hand which is a nightmare for all Thamizhans (although the peace talk is going on) say if something goes wrong inside the Thamizh people organizations then all bloodshed would be worth nothing but...like standing up again to fall down. Anyway India like countries will suffer the consequences so will the Thamizh politicans and others who take chances on the poor and the illiterated and their language and society...including rebels.

An outsider like you should live in Tamil Nadu and live like tamilians, imbibe its culture before criticizing it.
