what is the significance of the kungamum pottu, and why don't widows use them? Response to this question will help alleviate confusion!

The santhanam stripe over the forehead along with manjal kumkumam is typical of Malayali hindus. Tamils and other South Indians are morely seen with vibhooti and manjal kumkumam, and mostly in TN, it is the t r i p u n d a sign, either by stripes, or all over the forehead.
In Kerala, santhanam is smeared all over the body when hindus perform rituals paalkudam, kaavadi, thimithi, etc.
