What was the original name of the place? Are we sure it is Chennai and not Madras? Let's explore.

  so what you dont want the language to evolve? I thought that was a point of the language to evolve and to be able to communicate, who made languages stagnant? since we have sords that contain "S" now we need that letter if such a letter does nto exist.

  Coming back to Madras. The origin for the name "Madras" is in Portugese. The early Portugese traders/settlers who came to the east coast named the fishing village which was known as chennapattinam (named after one chennappa naicker who was a cheiftain) as Madras. They wanted to name it after Mary, mother of Jesus. It was called "madre de dios"--mother of god to begin with which got shortened to Madras.

  I don't have access to the references you gave nor do I have the time to read them. My reference is a book authored by Robert Kanigel of Johns Hopkins University by the title, "The man who knew infinity" a biographical account of Srinivasa Ramanaujan.

  Why do you think we need an 's', what words are there that we need 's'.
  
  Evolution doesnt' mean just scre*wing our language to become a diff language. Also keep in mind evolution dosen't necessary enhance our language, becuase evolution is only a process, but the destination has to reached by steering in the right direction ('artificial selection').
  Just because a language is evolving doesn't mean it's getting better akin to just because you're inside an elevatior (lift) doesn't mean you're ascending! What words are they again, those needing a 's'?
