####But I believe it is a very complicated and challenging language to write and read with####
It does not sound like u want to learn Tamil.
"Where there is a wish, there is a way".
I studied in great tamil medium till my 12th std. When I joined a central govt college, I thought of quitting it as everyting was in English. I found it very tough. Sometimes i think "If tamil had been an international language, it would have been....."
###Why can't tamil use the standard western alphabet used in most european languages??###
Giving up tamil alphabets just becoz you find it difficult??????

Recently SA Tamils brought SUN TV to South Africa. This is purely because of their interest of developing their Tamil speaking ability. Mr.Devan Nair who is a SA Tamil played major role on this initiative. They beleive that watching Tamil TV programs will improve their interactive Tamil. Of course, it's true.

I am from South Africa and definately think Tamil is dying or dead in SA. I once wrote to one of the two main cinema companies to ask them to show a Tamil movie that had been a major hit in Japan (i think its Muthu). They replied back to me but didnt take any action after that. Kanathil Muthamittal became the first Tamil movie to be shown in a cinema complex where they usually show English movies. I think there were three people watching when I went to see it.
Hindi movies on the other hand are flourishing because it gets support from Bollywood and a Indian Central Government Agency. Kanathil Muthamittal (which is much better than most commercial Hindu movies) was a failure in SA because of its marketing. We need to change this.

//Hindi movies on the other hand are flourishing because it gets support from Bollywood and a Indian Central Government Agency//
Don't spread lies. Which govt agency is supporting hindi movies. Hindi movies all over the world make more money than tamil movies because hindi's reach is far more than tamil.
If and when, tamils become as much as Hindiwallahs in number, their movies will also make as much money as hindi movies. This is simple business.

Actually, my post was not hindi movie bashing but they do get support from the central government.
Here is an example, when the bollywood movie industry goes through a bad phase, some ministry (forgotten which one) will help it out through tax cuts. Whereas all regional movies have to rely on their states to do the same.
Hindi movies are definately marketed better and do get more support from central government (please dont read this as individual movies get support). My point was that Tamil movies should do a better job of marketing.

Proof please. When and where did central govt give tax cut to hindi movie industry. If some state govt gives some tax cut, then that's their decision. No one is stopping TN govt from doing so.
Bollywood since the last few years is going thru massive crisis and I am not aware of central govt doing anything to support hindi movies.

You are right. I dont have proof. Its because it was told to me by a movie complex owner. I presume he didnot lie to me and I still presume that.
When I was discussing this with a Bengali friend, he told me that ALL Indian movies get tax exemptions on the money made overseas. However, he totally believe this came about because of the success of Bollywood movies. He felt that had Bengali movies been successful internationally, this tax-exemption law wouldnot have come about. Let me say, that is his opinion.
He further explained, that Hindi is often promoted by the central government overseas through the embassies and Indian cultural centers, like in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Australia etc but foreign Indians wishing to learn their mother tongue (be it Bengali, Tamil, Telugu etc) had no such options because then it has to be state sponsored.

I have also a bengali friend who thinks tamils are the most annoying people in india. Let me say, that is his opinion.

the above might be true, but what has that got to do with indian govt promoting hindi films.
Once again, Indian govt does not promote hindi films over non hindi films by helping them financially. It is simple economics. Hindi is FAR MORE SPOKEN/UNDERSTOOD language than tamil and consequently hindi films have wider reach than tamil. Things have reached such a point that hindi movie producers can safely ignore domestic market. Even if a movie is a flop in India, it it makes money outside India, the producer would make a profit. Two movies, 1942 A Love Store and Taal are the best examples of movies which flopped in India, but made profit outside India.
If I am in the movie business, excessive and chauvinistic love for tamil will not help me in making profit. I would rather opt for Hindi movies to make money.

Internationally, tamil speaking population is more than Hindi speaking. Do you know onething, recent Survey in some tamil periodical says Tamilians are living in more than 150 countries where atleast 100 tamils live.

Have some patience. Dr. Hero's efforts in making Tamil the national language of U.S.A. will bear fruit soon. Once U.S. becomes a tamilian nation them all other countries will follow. So will Tamil culture and reservations, auto rikshas, tamil movies, tamil silluku dancing, statues of ee vay Raa.Tamil Ninja also has predicted theb same and he is never wrong.

It is our own Tamil People in South Africa that are letting us down with our language. I have spoken with many Tamil people and they have said that would rather watch hindi movies than Tamil movies because it is boring. Now they are understanding hindi better than Tamil. I hope with the new Tamil TV Channal from Eastwest Television we will educate our Tamils to be proud of their language and culture. I dont understand how they can call themselves Tamils if they dont even follow their language and culture.

The trend of Tamil movies should be completely changed. The change is to make the Tamil movies
fit to reach the Indians all over the world. This initiative cannot be done in Tamil Nadu. So, It requires another place to produce world class Tamil movies(without usual idiotic things). Malaysia may be the suitable place because Malaysians (including non Indians) are interested to watch Tamil movies. A place in Malaysia may be developed as the Hollywood of Tamil movies.
