Most of them appear to be similar thevars and vanniar communities in Tamilnadu.Though a advance caste they do not resemble Vellalas and right hand chettis of Tamilnadu who appears similar to Brahmanas except for being dark.Typical Chetties are very heavily built as we can see in Honorable minister of Commerce in Sri Lanka Mr Ravi Karunanayaka.In this they differ from Vellalas of Tamilnadu.But among Sri Lankan Vellalas there are groups who are heavily build as a result of mixing with left hand chetties and Thevans.

  Whom are you talking about Tamil chetties or telugu chetties or Kannada chetties? As far as I know, all chetties are there in TamilNadu.

  I was told by one of the Colombo Chetties with whom I associate closely that they came from malabar coast from the Portugese time. Obviously some Portugese mixing has taken at some place and the name Rodrigos has come in. Look at their names; casiechetty, Anandappa, Perumal, Tissaweerasinge, What can you derive from their names?

  The most remarkable thing about them is though a wealthy and respected community in urban centers of the south india,they showed physical features different from other so called forward communities in being muscular,fizzed haired and rather dark in complexion.This was a stark contrast to Vellala and Jain Chetties who dominated commerce in the south india from at least Maurya time onwards.
  I have heard that they evolved from among Thevan and Vannian like groups who lived outside traditional hindu states at the arrival of Muslim traders
