I would like to know the origin of the Gandla, also known as Gaaniga, community. They were originally oil pressers I believe. It's a sizable community in Tamil Nadu, AP and Karnataka (I don't know about the other states though). Are there family names specific to this community? I would really appreciate it if you can throw some light on this subject.

P.S.: Please refrain from community bashing. I've started this thread just to find out about the origins of my community, not to compare it with others in the negative sense. Thank you.

  Gandla and Goundla are two different professions among telugus. Goundla profession use Goud as their caste title. Apparaju is correct that gandla profession involve in extarcting oil thorugh ganuga( a circler tract with a stone wheel crushing the seeds pulled by oxen). Goundla profession involve in climbing Palm 20 -30 feet high and collecting tady.

  Apparajus website has a lot of information on Andhra castes, tribals and titles.
  
  He says that after after monopolizing Kallu (ie Toddy) production some Gaundla mercahnts would add a Gaud to their tile. So a Krishnagadu would become a Krisha Goud just Nadars climb to social as well as marital richess in TN.

  Yes I was referring to Gandla (Ganuga as you mentioned), not Gouds. And yes, I'm interested in know about the ontu-eddu, rendu-eddu gandlas. Do you know anything about Deva Gandlas?

  Gandla community are people who traditionally extract vegetable oil from seeds using ox driven mill. some use buffollows too. They are mostly common in Rayalaseema, Proddutur, Cuddapah, Tirupathy. I am from Proddutur.

  and raju. Gandla community are people who traditionally extract oil from ground nut, Nuvvulu and other oil seeds using ox driven mill. the traditional oil extracting has colapsed
