I have always wondered...how such a collosus of talendt as Sivaji Ganesan was so less known in his own country..!?
Was'nt his talent,...a part for generations to study?? So was Ray's talent!

Basically Sivaji didn't cater to the Hindi knowing audience.Lots oh his movies were not dubbed. Though many of the movies were remade, people didn't have a chance to compare his talent. Till yesterday South Indian talent was considered as the poor cousin of North Indian talent. Only after the advent of Maniratnam, we were looked with different scales.

i agree with ums remarks but i disagree with ums on Mani rathnam.kamal hassan, yesudas and s.p.b's talent were acknowledged long before the entry of mani.
ilayaraja was another great artist whose talents did not get noticed in the north.
the irony is that the 1980's(peak period of creativity for raja) was the worst period in hindi songs.they were starving for some good tunes.well i 'm digressing.....

Because of the parallel industry rivalry.A tamil could not care for dilip kumar as much as a hindi could not care for sivaji.
