It is intersting to note that there is no thread in this forum related to Romance. Is romance not an integral part of tamil literature?or was it purposefuly ingored.I feel that this is definetly worth a thread.I would welcome contributions from all about the role, value of Romance in tamil literature and your favourite quotes.

Chandra,
Thanks for posting the full song I was searching for it for a while .This particular song has enough material to make a film or at least a song sequence.
Another aspect is apart from the beauty of the song there are other features also .The social structure which existed or formed as background for the song however imagined it may be.
I strongly believe that you can not write a similar song in todays tamilnadu.
As kanchana pointed out Kannadasan has utilised akam in his song but the essence has not been reflected in the film itself. This is the main reason that tamil songs are very famous and much loved than the films as such.
I heard that akam poetry has been translated in english does anyone have any information in this

Hi Kutti
This poem has been translated into English by
A.K.Ramanujam in his book 'Poems of Love and
War'.Unfortunately I have kept my copy in my
native place.
Probably Chandra has the copy ( since he too
talks of AKR ) with him.

This is the beauty of this song.
It can fit into any period and any culture.
I dont think one can express love more naturally and subtly as it has been expressed in the last two lines.

We have already written all the greatest songs (various langusges)we are just rewriting them again and again .Seriously speaking I dont know why i felt like that .can U quote a similar song (similar in the sense of how each word is charged with emotins)in contemproary tamil lit.

In one way i feel that the health of tamil society in Tamilnadu is deteriorating many of them who read this poem may not even understand what is so romantic about "POO ena Theridam Nittral" song.
If that is the case a contemproary poet can not completly imagine such a situation where as in Cangam time they had a healthy society and which paved way for such a situation.
How many of the current Romantic poems passes the Romantic feeling to the ORDINARY reader ?

Mr. KK I believe you could find lot of intersting things about 'love and romance' in Tholkaapiyam and in Thirukkural (Inpathup paal; people have a different meaning for the word 'kamam' nowdays). Many other Thamizh Sanga Kaala works also have things that might be intersting to you.
