Here is my list of the most outstanding books in Tamil written in the modern era.

1. Thiruvalluvar alladu Vazhkkai vilakkam by Dr.M.Varadarasanar

2. Kamban Pudhiya Parvai by Prof. A.S.Gnanasambandan

3. Moha Mul by T.Janakiraman

4. En Charitram by Dr.U.V.Swaminatha Iyer

5. Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki

6. Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidharkal by Jayakanthan

7. Arthamulla Hindu Matham by Kannadasan

8. Palveedhi by Abdul Rahman

9. Unnal Mudiyum Tambi by Dr.M.S.Udayamoorthy

10. Ramayanam by Rajaji

I am sure that each of you will have a different list. But I am going by reach, impact and significance to create a comprehensive list. Any reactions?

  Some of the books I considered for inclusion in the above list but left out were
  1. Azhagin Sirippu by Bharatidasan
  2. Bhagavad Gita by Swami Chidbhavananda

  4. Mercury Pookkal by Balakumaran
  
  In retrospect I should have included Panchali Sabatham instead of M.S.Udayamoorthy's book in the original list

  I guess it will be difficult to compile a list of best books on all subjects in thamizh. In literature, my take would be:
  1. ponniyin selvan by kalki
  2. vishnupuram by jayamohan
  3. trilogy by jayakanthan (appuviRku appa sonna kadhaigaL, indha nEraththil ivaL, paattimaargaLum pEththimaargaLum)
  4. j.j.sila kurippugaL by sundhara ramasamy

  One book that I see is not included is Sudhandhira Daagam by Sri Si. Su. Chellappa. The book received the Saahitya Akademi Award for Tamil literature for 2002. Also his other work "Vaadivaasal," translated into English, French, and German.

  Vaakku Moolam by Nakulan, is in many ways a path breaking novel. Nakulan handles questions about the Right to die that countries like US,Netherlands etc. are grappling with currently more than 10 years after the book was written.

  most of the above 10 things aren't the top 10 books except perhaps the first but even Thirukkural is writting wrongly by fellow Thamizhans..so what to say other than..this is a nonsense nominating ill-done work (except Thirukkural and ponniyin selvan, en charitdram are good)
