Can anyone share their opinions about Vannadasan's
Short stories?
I like them for the intricate descriptions of everyday things, activities and people bringing out the aspect of beauty in everything; Vannadasan's expression about his love for life is contagious. Stories like 'Thanumai','Gnapakam','poai konday iruppaval','kadaisiyaha therindhavar' and many more are in the list I like.

VannadhAsan's latest collection of Short Stories titled "uyarappaRaththal" is quite disappointing when compared with his previous collections such as nadugai and samaveLi. I would write in detail later about samaveLi and uyarappaRaththal. IMO,in modern thamizh lit he has a unique place with his language and range of stories. Has he written any novels?

Vannathasan himself admitted he has written any novel as yet. It is just that his mind is more occupied with short stories and he feels the form of short stories is more powerful. He has expressed writing novel is not a problem, he can write as many as he wants but till now the short story form is what he feels right one for him to express himself and communicate very effectively. The same thing he has told in an interview with Sun TV(Vanakkam thamizagam)

varum pOgum is not a novel. It is long shortstory
in his samaveLi collection. Some of the images he has captured in this story are captivating.

His collection " kalika mudiyatha oppanaigal" is really a good one. When I read his stories I feel as if he has seen my life more than what I have seen.
When I read his story about a Barber I could visualise the whole story in my neigborhood Barber shop experience.
" nunukkamana unarvugalai" no one has expressed like him

Almost all short stories of my dear friend Vannadaasan are equally good. I am surprised to understand Vannadaasan enjoys more critical acclaim than Kalyanji (the poet Vannadaasan). Right from his early poems ('karuppu valayal kaiyudan oruthi kuninthu valainthu perukki ponaal), his poems are more evocative than those of the other members of 'nellai trimuverate'.
