Could You Shed Authentic Light On Tholkappiyar? What is there in Tholkappiyam, the earliest Sanga Tamizh Literature? What do you think about a claim that Tholkappiyar is a brahmin?

Srini:
I am also searching for more info on the subject...but one thing is sure Tholkappiar is not a real name and he was a Jains...He cannot be a Brahmin...had he been a brahmin he would have created "arya maya" as usual and would have created a scene as if Tamil is a derivative of snaskrit and Tamil Ilakkanum is a derivative of Panini!!!..

Tholkapiyar can never be a Brahmin as claimed by
people who have nothing to do in tamilnadu politics and Thinnai Thoongi culture. If he had
been a Brahmin, he would have have inserted the
useless anti human veri in the Thinai areas.
Instead he has only talked of the various heads
of that particular land and Thinai. Besides,
he would have vommited the kuppai puranas and
will be one of those to be ignored by the intelligentsia. After all it is not important in
what caste one is born in, because we have rascals
in all castes. Can anyone in the world prove that
that particular class is the best of Gods creation? What is the point of being born as a human but have no heart to help fellow beings?
After all is it in our hands to be born in a
particular caste? Therefore please spend more time
on the work of Tholkapiyar and not what caste he
belonged to, Regards.

tolkAppiyam is a grammatical treatise. It has three parts. The first one deals with the sounds or letters in Tamil. This is called ezhuththathikAram.(ezhuththu athikAram)(Chapter on the alphabet in Tamil)
The second one is col athikAram(Chapter on words)
The third one is poruL athikAram. By poruL, he means the theme for poetry(pATu poruL)tolkAppiyar has written 9 chapters on each athikAram.
many people say that the poruL athikAram in unique to Tamil. All ancient poets followed the concepts evolved by tolkAppiyar. The greateness of tolkAppiyar lies in his meticulous description of every aspect of a language.
Most the chapters end with the word 'iyal' like puNariyal (cErkkai vithi), puLLi mayangkiyal, akaththiNai iyal, puRaththiNai iyal, ceyyuLiyal and so on. But he names the first chapter in the first athikAram as nUn marapu and the second chapter as mozhi marapu. Why?
(athangOTTu AcAn is possibly tolkAppitar's teacher. tolkAppiyar introduced his treatise in the presence of athangOTTu AcAn.)

Why worry about the author of Tolkappiyam as a Brahmin or otherwise?
What is important is that its dating and its importance in the history of "Sangam" Tamil literature.
Scholars like K. N. Sivaraja Pillai argue based on flimsy grounds like "hora" etc., fixes its date to 7th / 9th century CE and so on.
The Tamil Pandits too talk about "Sanga Tamil" etc., denying the existence of "Sangams", because, such concept was reportedly floated by a "notorious Parppan / Brahmin" called Nakkirar, in his commentary to "Iraiyinar Agapporul".
Now, what is required is the genuine and sincere history.
Therefore, instead of abusing or condemning others, let us do real research that would be useful to Indians of all parts.

BLOODY GUYS WHO ABUSE BRAHMINS ... GO AND LEARN SOME BRAINS FROM THEM .. AND MR.SRINIVAS .. I WARN YOU .. DONT GO ON AND MAKE FOLLISH COMMENTS ON BRAHMINS .. HOW THE BLOODY HELL DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR U WHETHER THOLKAPPIYAM IS A BRAHMIN OR SOMETHING ELSE... U ARE TRYING TO PROVOKE THE ENTIRE GROUP HERE INTO CONTROVERSIAL OUTBURSTS AND THEN U MOVE OFF AS IF U KNOW SOMETHING .. U WILL GET RUN OVER BY THE TRUCK IF U DONT CHANGE THIS ATTITUDE. THOLKAPPIYAM FOR ALL I CARE AND FOR YR KIND INFORMATION WAS A TEA SHOP WALLAH WHO USED TO MAKE DOUBLE TEAS FOR A LIVELIHOOD . PEOPLE LIKE YU WHO COULD NOT PAY OFF 50 PS OR 8 ANNAS ... WERE ABUSED ROYALLY BY HIM . HIS COLOURFUL VOCABLURY WAS LIKED BY THE LOCAL GENTS AND ONE OF THEM DECIDED TO GIVE HIM A ELATED STATUS .. HE BECAME A GRAMMARIAN IN DUE COURSE OF TIME . THAT IS WHY EVEN TODAY TAMIL ABUSES HAVE A GRAMMATICAL CORRECTNESS THAT CANNOT BE MISSED. REFERENCE : THE GREAT BOOK OF TAMIL ORIGIN { SHELF NO 28, INDIAN CULTURE STUDY DIVISION , NEW YORK STATE LIBRARY .
GOT IT , ? AND BY THE WAY .. HE WAS A THEVAR ... WHO HAD TO SELL OFF HIS LAND DUE TO A DISPUTE AND HAD TO START A TEA KADAI. BY THE WAY .. HE ALSO USED TO SELL BAJJIS AND BONDAS ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAY WHEN THE TRAFFIC OF PEOPLE INCREASED .
I HOPE I HAVE CLARIFIED YOU ON ALL DOUBTS ON THOLKAPPIAR.. NOW PLEASE DONT DISUCSS ABOUT MATTERS IF U DONT KNOW .. ASK A EXPERT LIKE ME

tolkAppiyar was a Tamilian and is the greatest grammarian for Tamil. That's all. Don't worry about his caste.
