both the words ilakkanam and ilakkiyam are not tamil words.

the sanscrit words lakshanam and lakshiyam are adopted in tamil.

since no tamil word should start from a letter la
lakshanam and lakshiyam became ilakkanam and ilakkiyam.

ilakkanam or lakshanam tells about the kunadisayangal of a language, and lakshiyam or ilakkiyam (ilakku iyambuthal) tells about a ilakku.

  In fact it is the other way round the word ilakkanam and ilakkiyam are corrupted to the syntax of ha-thiruththam(sanskrit)simply you can call it ha bhasha were you can even start a word with mey ezhuththu without uyir.
