I happened to read an article on origin of marathi language. The web page has a statement about Panch-Dravidian Language ( Tamil, Telugu, Malyalee, Kannada & Marathi).The site was :

Does Marathi have anything common with SI Languages ? How old is this language ?

  A rather laughable suggestion has been made that the Gujjar dynasty which gave its name to Gujarat, was maratha in Origin. In fact, relative to Gujarat, they came from exactly the opposite direction, that is the north west passes, not from the south east...
  
  They were a central Asian tribe, and they were either Scythian or White huns. Thus little relation to the Marathas.
  
  Maratha rule which did come about later, was a sad period for gujarat, because it seems to be a matter of genetics, in that the 'paandus' were heavily corrupt even back then.
  Moghul rule created a far more glorious empire in Gujarat and the ascension of the Marathas was the beginning of a period of great decline for all the major cities. British rule saw a partial rejuvenation...

  Marathi is descended from Sanskrit and is therefore not Dravidian. A comparison of Marathi and Classical Sanskrit grammar will demonstrate it clearly.

  I feel funny with all the discussion here. We have to remember few historical facts and discount the basis of Aryo-dravidian divide. let me mention few points here.
  
  1. Language and ethnicity are two different issues, that is we cannot say all punjabi speakers are Aryan and and all Tamil speakers are Dravidian.
  
  2. Most of our heroes like Shankara, who wrote very heavily in Sanskrit is a Keralite and whose mother tongue is supposedly Malayalam. Yet he produced more books in Sanskrit and culturally unified India. Do we call him Aryan or Dravidian or simply Indian
  
  3. India technically has only two southern states, they are Kerala and Tamilnadu and four states in Central India, they are Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra and Karnataka. While Maharashtra and Orissa are linked to North, Andhra and Karnataka are linked to south, yet among these four central states there are lot of ethnic admixture and common history from Satavahanas to Yadavas to Maratha kings.
  
  4. Telugu is most Aryanised Dravidian language and Marathi is most Dravidianised Aryan language. Yet ancesters of Andhra at the time of Satavahanas spoke Maharashtrian Prakrit not telugu in the present form
  
  5. This gives me an idea India has continuity and contiguity and British with their theories of Aryan and Dravidian separateness tried to fragment India
