Homosexuality in our Culture

I am a sociologist studying about Gays, Lesbians and Cultures. There are mentions about homosexuality in Greek mythology. Can any one give accounts for this in Indian mythology -especially in ancient Tamil literature.
Some people even say that Lemuria continent (though there is no archaeological evidence for this) was full of Gays and Lesbians and so it vanished naturally. Would this be a rational argument?

Somebody has confused you with the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah and connected it with Lemuria.
Please refer to the Old Testament with refence to the story of the Prophet Lot.
And please ascertain whether there was a 'Lemuria' or not:-)

From the intellectually redoubtable Tenaruvi Rajan: "Some people even say that Lemuria continent (though there is no archaeological evidence for this) was full of Gays and Lesbians and so it vanished naturally. Would this be a rational argument?"
So you would like to rationally argue that a figment of your imagination (i.e. Lemuria) no longer exists because of the hypothetical sexual preferences of its alleged population?
Where exactly does rational come into all of this, pray?
Let's overload your other brain cell, too.
Assume this alleged continent of Lemuria was peopled entirely of people who preferred same-sex relationships, as you think.
1. How were they born, then? Forced heterosexual unions?
2. Did they all spontaneously become homosexual one day and decide to commit racial suicide by nonprocreation?
3. If this was a gradual social evolution to homosexuality and lesbianism, and eventually the population vanished, do you think this continent of Lemuria sunk without a trace from the wight of the corpses?
4. Was homosexuality socially enforced over some time that it took the race to die out? Did they have heterosexual deviants that they stoned, or strung up on wire fences or made fun of?
5. Did they continue to propogate their race by asking for brave volunteers who would actually copulate, procreate and then go back to passionate snerd-nurgling and s_crewnicorns with a big sigh of relief now that that messy straight stuff was over?
6. When Lemuria disappeared, did it take your brain with it?
I say keep the f u c k wittage of this board. If you can't tell raging phobic idiocy from reasonable hypothesis, why are you studying sociology?

I hope this thread does not end up as place where people can give vent to their homophobic feelings. Anyhow sice we are talking about homosexual elements in Indian culture, one could look at the Mohini (one of the lesser incarnations of Vishnu) myth. Shiva was so supposed to have been enamoured of Mohini that he had sex with her. An offspring was born in a rather unusual way (for obvious biological reasons the baby could not be delivered normally so he had to be cut out). Anyhow the offspring was abandoned to be picked up by a king and later became Lord Ayyappa of Sabarimala. A friend of mine had presented a rather interesting paper on the homosexual undertones in the Ayyappa cult...only men allowed, no "sexually active" women allowed, the male communal life before the pilgrimage and so on.
One could also look at the homoeroticism in Arjuna's disguise during exile.

Shard,
You said of Lord Ayyappa >>offspring was born in a rather unusual way<<. In fact I remember being told that he was cut out from the thigh of Mohini/Vishnu. Could be a veiled reference to intra-femural intercourse as practised by some homosexuals.

Intra-femural intercourse? call it choad f uc king, dude!
Actually, there are a few other characters that are "thigh-born" in Indian mythology.
Aurva of the Bhargava lineage, who was persuaded by his ancestors to marry and procreate as they hung upside-down like bats in a cave is one. Apparently there was a group of kshatriyas who killed off most of the Bhargava men to get at their treasure. Aurva survived because his mother hid him as an embryo in her thigh (uru). Being born of a thigh, he was called aurva - thigh born.
The apsaras Urvashi was also a similar case, if I remember.
So while being born of a thigh is unusual - though not the most unusual birth method in the Indian mythos - I would disagree that it has homosexual connotations.
On the other hand maybe that was the reason Aurva did not want to marry, and not that he was gathering 'tapas' powers to take revenge on the killers of his family.

wow, the guy who just bashed the sociologists views on sumeria deserves our pitty! if u cannot tell the differece between a rational question and a gay bashing statement then i wonder how u find the proper switch to turn on your computer! what is your reason to bash this person for being curius?!i want it clear that i am not attacking u, but u sound like u have some serius issues! u almost sound like an intellectual midget who is trying to sound like an intellectual giant, i dont even think u understand what the student was even talking about!it is mythology! of course there are inconsistencies u sloth! this is a place to share ideas, not attack things u dont understand for the hell of it!and on an emotional level...u need help, u sound very angry, like your looking for a fight, maybe when u evolve a little and YOUR other brain cell kicks in, u can come here and debate some views rationally, but until then, people like u have no place in theology or society for that matter,i mean come on, the person asked a simple question and u get on your soapbox and make yourself look foolish, by the way, i am a theology prof. at UNC, i shared your...unique points of view with my students...they all found them childish and amusing, enven made some of them angry, i think that is the rise that u hoped to get anyway...and if that is too hard for u to grasp, it means u like to piss people off! to your own detriment...u will just have to look that one up!
