I figured the Tamil lit group might be the most knowledgeable of the lot. I need help. I need to know the English name of a flower known as 'Sevvanthi' or 'Sevandhi' in Tamil.
If you can give me a site where there is a picture, that would be much better.
Thanks for your time.

Actually Chrysanthemums are known as 'Samandhi' in Tamil. Are they one and the same then? Samandhi and Sevanthi?

Sevvanthi and Samanthi are the same both refer to Chrysanthamun indicum. You should also check Tagetes erecta which is the yellow samanthi and Tagetes patula which is the red samanthi.

Samanthi and sevanthi are not same and there isn't a tranlation for every word in Thamizh in English since English only have couple of thousands of word. Compare to Thamizh. I'll find out the right word if i can it'll take 2 more days. Don't worry i'll give u the anwer in 2 days

Tamil classification of plants is indeed very advance. In English it is common name, botanical name and scientific name, but all can refer to the same plant. The scientific name for samanthi is Tagetes erecta, and sevanthi is Tagetes patula, the botanical name for both is Chrysanthamun indicum and the common name is marigold.

I was thinking that sevanthi is marigold (genus: Tagetes or Calendula). It is also known as cAmanthi. sevanthi is a distorted form of sevvanthi---sev (sivappu or red) and anthi (the evening twilight time)-- meaning the red color of twilight. The western marigold is also known as thulukka camanthi in Tamil.

Since nobody answered yur question so far, I am going to venture. *Slang* can be equated to *kochchai* in Tamil. *kochchai* can also be called colloquial.
