Balaji the reason I kept making the mistaking of posting in TSCII font was, I used to follow my threrukkuRaL which is:
ݗ얅 鑿
ݴ얅 .
izai thoRum (vinaith thokai)
But the *thiruk* kuRaL is:
ݴ얅 ә
ݴ얅 .

It is a good idea to contrast the *thirukkuRaL* posted before reproduced:

with this:

In the kuRaL,
"anpukkum uNdO adaikkum thAz Arvalar
punkaNNIr pUcal tharum."
Arvalar is supposed to mean "those who have sincerely love (you)".
Though "Arvalar" indirectly means "Arvam uLLavar"
or "anbu uLLavar", could some one give me how exactly the word "Arvalar" breaks into components leading to the above (or any other exact meaning)?
Most kuRaL books simply give the urai without the collurai (pathavurai).
Thanks,
Chandra

A possible breakdown seemed to be "Ar" + "valar"
valar = vallavar, ceypavar etc...leading to "Arthal vallavar"
But Arthal does not seem to have the meaning of to love; but "Ar" means "porun-thu" ...may be "uLLam porun-thiyavar"?

Chandra,
I think 'Arvalar' can not be further broken down into two words. But can be broken down as below :
aarva + al + ar
whereas 'ar' is the 'palarpaal viguthi'. Forgot the grammer for the 'al' but vaguely remember it as an 'asai'. I think this is how it is broken down (have done a lot of these in 9th std. but am rusty because of out of touch)
While talking about this, I would also like to ask about the 'vallOr' which I used in one of my paa-s in VVV. Isn't 'vali udaiyOr' 'valiyOr' instead of 'vallOr' ?
vali + Or(viguthi) = valiyOr ??
and,
what is the word for 'vaNmai udaiyOr' ?
vaNmai + Or = ??????

venky,
Re: valloR etc.
First of all the root word here is:
val and not vali.
There are words like "vallan"
etc. in thirukkuRaL itself.
"
colal vallan cOrvilan anjcAn avanai
ikalvellal yArkkum arithu".
Just as ellOr, ellAr, n-allAr, n-allOr etc.
vaNmai udaiyOr:
Again the root is "vaL" as in "vaLLal", "vaLLanmai" etc.
I know there is the word "vaLLiyOr"
in puRan-AnURu:
"vaLLiyOrp padarn-thu puLLiR pOki".
I don't think it is wrong to have the word "vaLLOr" like "n-allOr". I would however search the texts for that word.
So,

A request to the other Manivannan, please tell us if you want to know where to BUY thirukkuRaL or if you are looking for an online version. If you need an online version, can you read it in Tamil? Have you tried http://www.projectmadurai.org ? Are you also looking for commentaries? Are you looking for modern Tamil commentaries or do you need an English commentary? Have you tried the Penguin version or the one from the Hawaii Gurumuni? Give us a hint!
Thanks,
