'Thol' means, 'ancient'; 'kaappiyam' means Classics.
It is supposed to be the oldest available treatise of grammar on Thamizh literary classics & the ways of life of the Tamils according to the Geographical places they lived, like kuRunji, marutham, mullai, paalai.
Some details of it are available in the internet.
