can anyone say why tamilians like sob stories only? (Is sobber sober?) Why the fmininst authors indulge in writing plots of Nalayani and santa sakkubai type only? I was told by a friend of mine that there are no takers for any bold and new plots. We have only athimbers and horrible mamiyar churning the same again and again.
are we as STAR would say "like that only" ?

  I would not say tamils like sob stories and only sob stories.
  But the tamils who like sob stories are willing to pay their hard earned money to buy them.
  A simple question of supply and demand. If enough readers support bold new plots and I am sure the writers will rise to the occasion. Infact many of the writers of non-sob stories ask for very little by way of compensation. So it should be possible for a small number of committed readers to support and encourage serious writers.
  
  I resent it greatly when my Karnatic music knowing relatives and friends look down up on
  my simple tastes musicwise and make me feel like I am a simpleton. I will try very hard not to be elitist about the readers of sob stories. It is not my taste but I will not question their right to spend their money on what they like.
  
  Also I think it would be unrealistic to expect the serious fiction to sell as much as the sob stories. Simply a matter of numbers. But again it should be possible to find enough committed readership to support serious bold new fiction. It would be regrettable if Tamil pEsum nallulakam cant even do that.
