That's simple : i'll give u an example ... look at the last deepavali release pithamagan. That's the best example for an art film ! and the fact is that, that's also a commercial movie.
got it ? no ? ok forget it ;-)

Pithamagan an art film?,
Oh God,please don't classify any film which just lacks the entertainment elements as an art film.
Divja / Italy,
Try and get movies of Satyajit Ray,Adoor,Dasgupta to know what an art film is.It can't be defined or differentiated like you have asked, but an Art film is largely the expression of its maker, who don't want to dilute his product for attracting the common man,an art film needn't be always set in rural background, and not that it needs a negative ending,an art film narrates a poignant tale and the film-maker may employ his techniques to underline his point,he may use metaphors, symbolisms, physical imageries to illustrate his theme.
And about commercial film, well any film which targets the audiences with Masala,or heavy cheesy melodrama,or overdone opulent hungamas or anything else which will attract crowds is a commercial film.
Well, my opinion may be immature, expecting more meaningful discussions on this topic.

assuming u r from swisland get a film out from swissland called 'hohhenfuer'. its a really great film made in 1994? its the best swiss film ever made. that is a classic 'post-modern' art film.
if u can get it, get the tamil film starring kamal and rajni called 'aval appadi thaan'. thats is a new-art/neo-commercial film (your choice).
pithamagan is a bit different. its in the neo-commercial film style of bharathyraja.

I don't understand...is it a sarcastic remark on my posting?
I agree ''aval appadi thaan' is a good film.Even the good old 'Uthiripookal',Balu mahendra's 'Azhiyaatha kolangal' are art films, but they didn't reach out to fame as Ray's work did, that's why i recommended Ray's works,in the present day scenario, there are struggling dir. like Jayabharathy,Ponvannan,Gnana Rajasekaran to make a mark, but still they are struggling, whereas Malayalam,Bengali movies have gone out of our borders, and they have earned an international reputation.

mmm...plz tell me names of films by jayabharathy, ponvannan and rajasekaran.
even hollywood or europe bother with 'art' films anymore. in 1992 tarantino's 'reservoir dogs' was seen initially as an art film in europe but the template is then created to make the standard wider for classification. when did adoor last give a film. S ray was lucky thta he had a french distributor....do u think he could release a film now. video has changed it all. now we can get old classic art films in video/dvd/sattelite. there isnt an alternative film market anymore.

Adoor's gave a movie 'Shadow kill' after five years of hibernation, last year.
Jayabharathy-'Nanbaa nanbaa'
Ponvannan-'Nadhi karayinelle'
Rajasekaran hasn't given anything in the recent times.BTW, I was also trying to make your point only, that art films don't have big support here.Thats why i named the directors and said they are still struggling. And talking abt Hollywood, there are independent directors working outside Hollywood,I don't see any dearth for Art films there. But nowadays Iranian films are making a mark in the International arena.FYI the offbeat 'Choker bali' is a hit in Bengal(Ofcourse because Aish starred in it)can such things happen here?It won't.What to do,but i feel an industry such a ours which churns out large no. of movies should try and earn name in the international arena,we can't afford to make a Matrix or Titanic, but sensitive stories ,poignantly told will always find place in festivals.when malayalam cinema can do it,tamil cinema is not capable of doing it.
