No no no. The best is Vijaykanth and none other than Vijaykanth. His facial expressions are excellent. He is the only one who is keen on continuing the rich heritage and culture of Bharatanatyam. For him, dance is a way of life.
Yes, there may be many dancers like Kamala, Balasaraswathi, etc. etc., but there is only one Vijaykanth who can be easily called the Master of Dance.
Be it a dance set to a ghazal, or be it any traditional dance involving difficult steps, he does it with flowing ease of one who has been exposed to beats and rhythms right from the foetal stage.
Vijaykanth is THE BEST DANCER the world has ever had and i am sure everyone will agree with me. There can be no second opinion. Don't you agree, friends ?

Dear Madhu,
You haven't mention one most important thing of dance movement of Captain. His eyes will also dance when he is fighting. Isn't it? Whenever you start writing about Captain, you must keep it in mind that you are writing about a DESIGNATE CM.of Thanga Tamizhnadu. This is not written to hurt captain's fan. But it is going to happen.

The topic of this discussion is "who is the best dancer", not "who used to be the best dancer"! So, what do we have today? Can Anita Ratnam or Padma Subramaniam dance as they used to? Can they dance at least half as well as Medha Hari in her DVD video? (these DVDs give a really sharp picture of facial abhinaya that you will never see on a VHS tape!) The teachers should teach, and the dancers should dance. If a dancer is too
fat because he or she does not practise, can we call him/her a dancer?

For everybody's information, Kamala Lakshmanan and Vyjainthimala are still dancing, true to Barathanatyam's glamour. Thank goodness for them not in Tamil movies!!! Padma subramaniam dances with her eyes and facial muscles. She does not have to jump around. These older dancers are still dancing thru vidoes, CDs and DVDs. From the viewers' perspective, that is reality, though not real time. So they are relevant now as they were decades ago. Fat, thin, short, tall, fair, dark, we can stll call a dancer a "dancer" Afterall dance and music come from within and reaches the viewers' and listeners' within. It does not matter as much to ponder when and where it happens. One has to evolve to a certain level to understand this notion.

A real danceuse (patra), according to Abhinayadarpanam (one of the two most autoritative texts on Bharatanatyam), must possess the following qualities. She has to be
(1) young, (2) slender, (3) beautiful, (4) with large eyes, (5) with well-rounded breasts, (6) self-confident, (7) witty, (8) pleasing, (9) well-aware of when to dance and when to stop (able to follow the flow of songs and music, and to dance in tact (thalam)) (10) with splendid costumes and (11) of a happy disposition.
The danseuse must be beautiful, for according to Sangitaratnakara the true dance relates to a beautiful body, and any dance other than this is simply caricatures (VII.1246).
You can easily find out if a particular dancer is authentic or not by reading about the criteria of a real dancer (patra) in the Natya shastra (XXVII.97-98).
The ten disqualifying criteria according to Abhinayadarpanam: (1) women with white specks in the apple of their eye, or (2) women who have scanty hair, or (3) have thick lips, or (4) pendant breasts, or (5) who are either very fat or (6) very thin, or are either (7) very tall or (8) very short, or (9) hunch-backed, or (10) voiceless.
