  Rocky strikes it right for a movie career

  IN JUST 12 months, ex-boxing champ Rocky Selvarajoo has gone from jailbird to prospective film star. And his first role is to play a villain.
  
  The 48-year-old joins a handful of Singaporeans who have left the Republic to make it big in India's thriving movie industry.
  
  He will film in Madras in the state of Tamil
  Nadu, the centre of the Tamil movie industry.
  
  Although the number of Tamil movies and the salaries of the actors do not compare to their
  Hindi counterparts based in Bombay, Tamil stars earn from $100,000 upwards for a film.
  
  Singaporeans, however, find it hard to break into the industry because most Indian films are stuffed with songs and dances, and few hopefuls from here are skilled in classical music or dance, said Mrs Vijayrani Lawrence.
  
  A former movie star in the 1960s, she acted in about 30 Tamil movies before she immigrated here in 1976.
  
  Only three Singaporeans have hit it big in the Tamil movie industry so far - Madhavi Ramakrishnan, who made a name as a comic actor in the 1960s; Ranjini, who starred in about 50 movies in the 1990s and is living in Britain; and Manimaran, who appeared in a couple of movies in the 1990s. All three have retired.
  
  Still, Mr Selvarajoo is optimistic he will make it big. The national boxer, who retired 16 years ago, described the offer as a 'blessing from God' after the last disastrous 12 months. Last April, the father of two wa convicted for impersonating a police officer and stealing $295 from a woman.
  
  He added: 'Sometimes the audience doesn't remember the hero, they remember only the bad guy because of his strong character.'
